Dreamingawake, are you new here? If you have nothing nice to say, don't post at all? You must be new. When I was new here and read all of the TRULY hurtful things people were saying to each other, I suggested something like that myself. Then, I was verbally assaulted about everything from my opinions to the way I looked. So, as sweet as that notion is, it's just never gonna happen here. But, you're right...it's a board, lets ask questions and get opinions. What CD should I listen to this morning while driving to work and I still dont' know what I'm making for lunch...any ideas? hehe Just kidding around

Since my name was invoked (thanks Gov!), I'll put my opinion out there.
No...you should never singer this song at an audition if you're a man. Hell...you shouldn't sing this song at an audition if you're a white female. But that wasn't the question.
AN I AM TELLING... is a really terrific song. Although it's repetitive, it's depth of feeling comes from the fact that over and over again, this person is begging, pleading, demanding and shouting that they'll never leave their lover, no matter how the lover feels about the matter. When I decided to take this song on in my show, I recognized the fact that I am (was at the time) a 31 year-old white man. I simply cannot do what Jennifer Holliday does with the song and there would be no point in trying. My musical director and I decided to explore how else this song could be done. We figured that, instead of a huge gospel cry, this song should be sung from a quite place of total devestation. It took on a Tori Amos feel and, if I may say so, worked very well.
Songs are meant to be out there and interpreted by many artists. No song should be off-limits just because a powerhouse singer put their indelible stamp on it. Figure out the what, why and how of the song and make that your own. Play around with the arrangements. Make it come from your experience...don't copy the originator.
