missing the point

So many of you have entirely missed the point HF was trying to make. He never said that fil, & tv stars should not be on broadway, he never said that CZJ did not deserve her award, he never said that Green Day should not have performed. His point is that the Tony Awards broadcast should return to the practice of featuring those who have devoted the majority of their careers to the stage. That can and should be accomplished while at the same time acknowledging the contributions of stars who are currently appearing.
I grew up in a tiny Ky town and the one night when I knew that I could see on TV a show that featured actors who were on broadway and doing what I dreamed of doing, was the Tony Awards broadcast. If I were that same kid now, I think that I would get a much different experience. I know times have changed, but I would much rather that the Tony Awards used its time to celebrate all those who make up Broadway, not just those who are on Broadway but are better known for another medium.
Just my two cents worth.

Did this need a new thread?

It would help to post this on the thread where the discussion is taking place. We are aware of Hunter's intentions and what he said. The conversation evolved and we discussed comments made by others in addition to Hunter Foster.

And I get the sentiment, but it's kind of ridiculous.

I don't see how panning to Beyonce in the audience is less interesting than panning to Laura Benanti.

And no, he may not have said "stars shouldn't be on Broadway" or "rock bands shouldn't take away our spotlight at the Tonys", but it was implied. What else could he have meant by returning the Tonys to the actors?

It's all very silly.

Why is it when someone disagrees around here, the first response is to say they "don't get it" or are "missing the point"?

I get what Foster's point is. I think we all do. We just disagree. Doesn't mean we don't "get it".

Dear Hunter,

Go away.

There is a difference between wanting to make the TONYS about Broadway again & what Hunter and Crew are doing. The group is made up of bitter out of work actors who take it out on successful ones.

I'm confused. Do people want the Tonys to be broadcast on national television or no? You can opine all you want about the authenticity of Broadway and its actors, but if this wish comes true, many will eventually be biatching that Tonys are "only" appearing on TNT at 3:00pm, 2 weeks after the awards are handed out.

Seriously, this vent is getting old.

[Edit] I just saw the HF thread after this post. Updated On: 6/18/10 at 07:53 PM

This would have a much greater impact if more respected members of the Broadway community jumped on board (no offense Hunter & Jen Cody)and if they clarified their mission and suggested ways to implement change rather than aimlessly bellyaching.

I don't agree. The Tony Awards is a money making broadcast just like any other. If the Broadway community seriously wants to jeopardize the national telecast and the once-annual national bump it receives, for a basic cable audience at some arbitrary time for the sake of being true to itself and honoring only the actors, then they will probably be in for a rude awakening when they find that even more actors are out of work due to weak ticket sales.

And FWIF, show me one Broadway actor who wouldn't be packing his sunscreen and bathing suit if Hollywood came a'callin'. Everyone likes to "get real" until the big shots call on you.

even if he didn't say it...he didn't defend it when Jen Cody made all of those comments.

it's too late. back peddling won't work. and if it was meant the way "we didn't get it" then it should have been better thought out because it came across as nothing more than a childish rant at first. put into the mix the apparent report of jen and hunter not being allowed to walk to Tony red carpet....well, you know.
