ok, im sorry this is long, but its my first review here, so please read it!
first off, for the first time in my theater-going life, i was late for a show! my bus was supposed to pull in at 1:20 which would have given us plenty of time to make it to the theater, but instead it got in at exactly 2:00- which was enough to give me a heart attack. we walked in during the middle of "it sucks to be me", and the audience was already in hysterics. luckily, my friend and i sat on the end of the row, so we didnt have to be the jerks who go, "excuse me, sorry" and make everyone move while the show is going on.
the entire cast was present, which was great. i have to say that j-tags really stood out. i dont know what hugh jackman did for that tony, but it must have been something great to beat him. secondly, i hate the fact that ann harada didnt get a nomination, she was histerical, and what a voice!
i think one of my favorites was "everyone's a little bit racist", its just so clever and very well performed. the great thing about this show, for me, was that i had heard a lot of the jokes in the songs many times from listening to the cast recording, and yet i still cracked up when i heard them on stage.
the energy was fantastic, and it felt like there was a real connection between the audience and the performers (they had us in the palm of their sometimes furry hands!) during "for now", we all clapped and screamed for the george bush part. and when the lights went out at the end everyone leaped to their feet.
afterwards i got up enough nerve for my first stage door experience. i got my program signed by six of the seven cast members (the one who didnt sign, i must say, was pretty rude, and walked by everyone and pretended we werent there, even though we clapped at their enterence from the stage door. i guess they were just tired, but that didnt stop the rest of the cast from signing). tartaglia and jenifer barnhart were the nicest cast members, and talked to us about the show and everything. i congradulated them on their (now, im sure of it...) MUCH DESERVED tony win!
