Posted: 6/14/04 at 2:55pmI highly reccomend Ragtime. It is a wonderful score. Don't be afraid to get older musicals on CD either. You will find that you will enjoy them much more than you might realize if you give them a chance....

How about Aida.
And perhaps the OLC of Miss Saigon which is very good.
And the Symphonic Recording of Les Miserables with the magnificent Philip Quast as Javert and Anthony Warlow as Enj.

Considering what you have so far, I would recommend:
The Full Monty
Once on This Island
Urinetown
The Scarlet Pimpernel
Ragtime
Crazy For You
42nd Street

Anything by Jason Robert Brown
Bat Boy
tick, tick...BOOM!
I don't own Kristin Chenoweth's solo cd (collection of Broadway songs) but I've seen her perform some of the songs and it's great. I'm definately buying that.

Posted: 6/14/04 at 6:28pmYou have a great start! I would for sure invest in Ragtime, Rent, and Last Five Years...Oh, and Kristin Chenoweth's solo CD is amazing--sooo much fun! Everyone has had really good suggestions so far. If you stick with them, you won't go wrong. Good luck!

Might I ask, what is "yagmcb"? I'm really not clear on that.
As for recordings, I recommend:
RENT (get the full recording, not the highlights.)
Aida
L5Y
Into The Woods (revival for Laura Benanti's Cinderella)
We Will Rock You (it's an import, but the cast is amazing.)
Bombay Dreams (If you like Indian rhythms, pick it up)
Urinetown

Here's a list that offers a WIDE vaiety of shows. Remember, never be afraid of something new! (OBC= Original Broadway Cast)
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (OBC)
ME AND MY GIRL (OBC)
MISS SAIGON (OLC)
GUYS AND DOLLS (The original OR the 1990 revival)
MY FAIR LADY (OBC- The one with the WHITE cover)
A CHORUS LINE (OC)
WEST SIDE STORY (OBC)
ON THE TOWN (Sony Broadway studio cast recording)
Any ENCORES Rodgers and Hart show (THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, BABES IN ARMS, PAL JOEY)
ON YOUR TOES (1983 Revival recording)
LIS MISERABLES (OBC 2-CD)
COMPANY (OBC)
THE FULL MONTY (OBC)
THE PRODUCERS (OBC)
INTO THE WOODS (OBC)
RENT (OBC 2-CD)
THE WIZ (OBC)
DREAMGIRLS (OBC)
NINE (OBC)
SWEENEY TODD (OBC 2-CD)
Of course any serious Broadway fan should have a copy of the Original Cast Recording of OKLAHOMA! Landmark recording.

If I'm repeating choices here, and I know I am, consider it an extra vote of confidence for that album.
Sweeney Todd (OBC)
A Little Night Music (OBC)
Company (OBC)
Falsettoland Off-Broadway Cast
Follies in Concert, which is vastly superior to the OBC
Gypsy Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, and Bernadette Peters' recordings each have their merits, so I'm not choosing. :)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Off-Broadway Cast)
My Fair Lady (OBC)
Oklahoma- the OBC, movie, and 1998 London recordings each have their merits
Pacific Overtures (OBC)
Sunday in the Park With George (OBC)
Sweeney Todd (OBC)
West Side Story (OBC!) Under no circumstances get the recording with Kiri te Kanawa and Jose Carreras first. It's great for the orchestra, but the singing is totally wrong.

Posted: 6/14/04 at 7:34pmI would try to find some older musicals since most of the ones you have now are current shows. Go for some classics - Gypsy, 42nd Street, My Fair Lady. You couldn't go wrong getting a CD that has songs from all different shows too. Some of the broadway compilations are great and that way you can see what songs you really like and by those CDs.

Posted: 6/15/04 at 8:46amI thought there was only a OLC not OBC of LES MIS. Also, I would choose the concert recording (the one that aired on PBS) over the OLC. Too bad they don't have one with Peter Lockyear as Marius. Another really good one is the Madison Square Garden Cast of THE WIZARD OF OZ. Jessica Grove (sp?) is amazing!

Posted: 6/15/04 at 9:48amThere are London and Broadway cast recordings of Les Miserables as well as countless others. The most complete is the 3-CD symphonic recording. The original London cast recording is my favorite, but there were several changes in the show after it was recorded.
