Posted: 11/27/05 at 1:36amEarlier today I just went out and bought John and Jen, and I really love it. Any other suggestions for off-broadway cast recordings? I don't want to blind-buy. Appreciate it.

Posted: 11/27/05 at 1:48amI fully recommend The Last Five Years with Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. It is not too long, has fantastic songs, and since almost the entire musical was sung, you can follow the plot easily. It's an incredible CD.

Posted: 11/27/05 at 1:53amMarch of the Falsettos by William Finn is another great off-Broadway show, Songs For A New World by Jason Robert Brown, Putting It Together which is a revue of Sondheim's work starring Julie Andrews and Rachel York, and I have heard Altar Boyz is really good though I have never listened to it.

I will second Songs For A New World and mildly suggest Lippa's Wild Party. Julia Murney is nothing but fabulous. Idina is great, too, of course.
I don't know if these were ever Off-Broadway (I know BLBC wasn't), but Myths & Hymns (if you liked Light in the Piazza) and Bright Lights, Big City.

FYI -- "Bright Lights, Big City" played off-Broadway at NY Theatre Workshop and "Myths & Hymns" played off-Broadway at The Public as "Saturn Returns."
You might consider adding "Violet" by Jeanine Tesori to your list -- a terrific score and show.

Bright Lights Big City is amazing.
Margo, it was a different cast, right?
Some guy: You looked great!
Idina: Thanks...I WAS SO HIGH! 8/21/05

I believe Wilson was the only hold-over on the Bright Lights cd. I'm not really a fan of that score.

Posted: 11/27/05 at 12:17pmthe only great country-western -themed off-Bway cast recording i've found is not das barbacu or urban cowboy or radio gals or etc. It's HANK WILLIAMS: LOST HIGHWAY. Jason Petty is awesome as Hank...amazing voice. His was the best star turn i've seen off-Bway since John did Hedwig!

Posted: 11/27/05 at 12:40pmI know alot about Falsettoland, but what is the difference between that and March of the Falsettos? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question.

March of the Falsettos is what is now Act I of Falsettos, and Falsettoland is Act 2. They were written seperatly though, and combined when the show went to Broadway under the name Falsettos. It is a trilogy, with In Trousers being Part 1.
I hope that made sense.

Posted: 11/27/05 at 12:49pmThank You. SOOOO--if i saw a production of FALSETTOLAND, i probably would have seen an abbreviation of MARCH OF THE FALSETTOS?

No. If you saw a production of Falsettos you would have seen March of the Falsettos in Act I and Falsettoland in Act II.
If you saw Falsettoland (though I don't think it's done seperatly much anymore, if at all), it would just be what is now Act II of Falsettos.

GClef2, If you go to Michael Rupert's MySpace page you can listen to the opening number "Four Jews In A Room Bitching" how it was heard on Broadway, with Trina singing with the guys. It's wonderful.

And if you're a general JRB fan, get "Songs of Jason Robert Brown" - its a collection of his stuff done by Lauren Kennedy. I <3 it!

Posted: 11/27/05 at 1:48pmIt's my pleasure GClef2. It's a great version. He had a version of "What More Can I Say" on his site earlier, but it's not on there anymore. It was divine! I wish they had made on of the Broadway version. I like Janet Metz, but would have loved to have Carolee on disc. But at least I get to hear Michael Rupert, Stephen Bogardus and Chip Zien on the recorings that exist.
