I have a dad in the military than knows nothing about broadway, a mom who is intrested in broadway but knows nothing about the shows out, a 13 year old brother who knows nothing as well, and then there's me who knows a lot about broadway and the current shows. Which shows out right now are appropriate for my family and are still really cool. Book of Mormon is sadly out so maybe less cursing? and my dad likes footbal so is Lombardi any good? Sorry for being kind of concided. Hope someone cane help.
I would recommended Lombardi for a play. For a musical, Baby It's You!, Million Dollar Quartet, or Rock of Ages could be good choices, as they have modern, pop/rock scores. Catch Me If You Can is also great, with some jazzy songs.
How to Succeed would be fun for everyone for a musical.

Do they have to be new or can they be from prior seasons?

Musical: The Addams Family or Wonderland
Play: Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo
The Addams Family
Wonderland
Sister Act
Catch Me If You Cam
since they don't really know Broadway well, like you said, then these scores are fun, particularly the last 3, and should keep them happy...hopefully! haha
Play: Lombardi
Musical: How To Succeed

If you don't want something from this current season I would suggest Mary Poppins. I just took my parents to see it the other day (very similar to yours; dad retired military) and they absolutely loved it! They are usually not big musical fans but my mom declared it the best show she had ever seen. Most people have seen the movie, and your parents might love to hear some familiar songs.

I can't believe anyone would recommend The Addams Family to anyone. I hope you guys are not making fun of this user.
Anyways, I say skip all the shows they recommended you and see Anything Goes or The People in the Picture.
Unsure of what to recommend for a straight play, but I would say How to Succeed for the musical, for sure.
(Maybe people are recommending The Addams Family because it's a good choice for pleasing such a wide range of ages, tastes, etc., even if it's far from the best show ever.)

I most deffinately am not making fool of him!
I'm just assuming you don't like The Addams Family. If you don't like it, doesn't mean other people agree with you. Some people really love this show! It's far from perfect, but it's fun...maybe not for you...but for others it is, and that's why I recommend it.

I agree. For this family, check out How to Succeed. WIll be something for everyone. It's a good introduction to Broadway. And, the 13 year old will be thrilled to see Harry Potter try to dance.
I'll echo everyone else and say How to Succeed would be a great choice for everybody.

Mormon would be perfect for a bunch of Broadway newcomers, since it's so utterly hysterical, so it's a shame you've crossed that off your list. Sister Act is very fun and palatable for lots of different types of people. Chances are, your parents have seen (and maybe enjoyed) the film, and I know I would take my entire family to see it. How to Succeed...was really boring to me, but if your family would be into the novelty of seeing Radcliffe, then maybe. Anything Goes is also a light and fun option. Another good family show is Billy Elliot. Every single member of my family adored it when we all saw it.
For a play, it sounds like you'd like the spectacle of War Horse.

LOMBARDI would be an excellent choice. It's a really fine production overall, and Dan Lauria and Judith Light are terrific in it.
