I think its interesting when people cover leads as well as other minor charactor parts... I like to go and see them as one part.. and see how they do in another... Anyone?? Who have you seen play different roles in the same show??
This was just brought up in the Spelling Bee thread where people were talking about how the Broadway cast is moving out and the tour cast (I think?) is coming in...
Les Miz fired a bunch of people just before their tenth anniversary on Broadway and re-auditioned everyone. Christeena Michelle Riggs, who was playing Eponine before the overhaul, ended up as Cosette in the new cast.
Not quite an issue of a supporting actor covering a lead, but I think it's interesting nonetheless.

Andrew, tonight isn't about you! It isn't even about me!!! - [FD]
I've seen Jennifer Evans in two of the female tracks on the Jersey Boys tour (the ones that aren't Mary Delgado). The women are kind of inconsequential in that show, though, so she didn't really make an impression.
- In Avenue Q, Jenn Barnhart (Mrs. T/Bad Idea Bear/Everyone else) covers the role of Kate Monster.
- In A Chorus Line, Tyler Hanes (Larry) covers the roles of Zach (and Bobby).
- Spring Awakening has a LOT of potential for this... Phoebe Strole (Anna) covers the roles of Ilse and Wendla; Brian Charles Johnson (Otto) is a cover for the role of Moritz and Georg; Jon Wright (Hanschen) is a cover for the role of Melchior.
In terms of tracks,
- In Hairspray, whoever is playing Shelley is usually (I think always, but I'm sure Mistress or Broadwayguy2 can correct me if I'm wrong) the second cover for the role of Tracy.
I saw Ed Begley play Brady in the original production of INHERIT THE WIND. A couple of years later I saw Begley play Drummond in a summer stock production.
I saw Barbara Cook play Carrie in a City Center production of CAROUSEL. A few years later she played Julie in a City Center production of CAROUSEL.
And, of course, everyone who stars in LITTLE ME plays a lot of roles
Ive seen clips and pictures of Chita as Velma, obviously, but then I saw Chita play Roxie in Chicago in Atlantic City in the 80s, opposite Kirsten Childs as Velma.
Very cool production

This week, I saw Maurice Murphy as Mitch Mahoney and Leaf Coneybear in 'Spelling Bee'. He was fine in both roles, although the volunteer speller next to him when he was Leaf was obviously quite frightened of him. XD
Rachel deBenedet as Muriel and Lenore/Renee in DRS Krysta Rodruguez as Ilse and Enseble in SA Gerard Canonico as Georg and Ensemble in SA Eric La Juan Summers as George and Ensemble in TWS ... and a lot more.
I was so sure someone would have done this already, so I'll be the first! Christine Ebersole plays Big Edie in Act I and Little Edie in Act II. Technically, that's two roles in the same show, is it not?
For that matter, so are John McMartin, and Matt Cavenaugh (Erin Davie, too, for "Choose to Be Happy".)
Other literal shows: Jeff Keller and George Lee Andrews switched between Andre/Firmin in Phantom. Saw Derrick Williams in the chorus of "Wicked" then he went on as Fiyero replacement.

Lorraine: That depends on what it is.
Dean: I think you're really really pretty.
Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.
Not sure if this counts, but I saw Jason Robards in LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT as both Jamie (in the film version) and James Tyrone Sr. (in a revival at the Kennedy Center with Zoe Caldwell and Michael Moriarty in the 70s).
Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly switched off playing the lead roles in TRUE WEST and I saw both.
