That was rude. Phantom is the greatest musical to ever hit Broadway. Just because you obviously weren't moved by it doesn't mean its a piece of &%*#(@. I'm sick of people putting it down while their favorite shows tank after a short run.

Phantom is deffinately an amazing show. Some people enjoy it(some WAY more than others) and some people dont. Just because one person did not personally care for it, doesnt mean it is not a good show, its just not in their taste. This goes for ALL shows (Mary Poppins, RENT, Wicked, Spring Awakening, High Fidelity, and even CATS) Some people will enjoy them, some wont, but I would DEFFINATELY say they are all amazing in their own ways. I mean, Mary Poppins flying over the audience? Pretty amazing I must say. And Cats prancing around in beautiful costumes under amazing lighting singing a great score, pretty great, just not my cup of tea!

Respect everyones opinion, because thats all they are... opinions... Just because you dont agree does not mean they are wrong!

I'm just gunna show my support for Phantom since for once we aren't getting outnumbered by people who are bitter about Phantom being the most successful show on B-way. Sorry friends, it is. You can't do annnything about that.

You people think that there's a huge difference between "commercial success" and "good theater". There isn't! Good theater ultimately meens it touches people, it moves them. I will admit that it's not the best written show in the world. I don't think it's the worst either. But that doesn't mean anything. The point is, it touches people. Isn't that the purpose for any kind of artform? I meen have any of you been to drama school and learned this?

Here someone do this for me. Someone like you Winston would be great. Tell me exactly how suuuch a ****ty show has ran for 19 years on Broadway? Then we can take it from there. It'd be refreshing to hear one of you actually make an argument for once.

There's a lot to appreciate in ALW's Phantom, and a lot to hate, like the percussion.

But he borrows from a lot of grand opera traditions and most of his takes on the forms are pretty satisfying. the Dramatic arch is there and it delivers, which is more than I can say for many musicals.

Is the music in yeston's Phantom better? Much of the time, yes.
Is it as grand and lush as ALW's? No, and that's what ultimately makes Yeston's Phantom fall short, it can't win against the spectacle.

But It's a good piece and it'll be around for a long time, with good reason.

Well, to answer your question,

The answer is money and publicity and its a spectacle, it's become a household name, so it can just run forever, like a big amusement park ride.

The show had tons of money behind it and it just keeps chugging on, it really doesn't have anything to do with whether its good or bad, it appeals to a wide audience of people who do touristy things.

But when it first opened, I thought it was cool. I was a big fan, a teenytinyphan, I think I was 10 or 11 when it opened, and I saw it the first month.

Ive seen it a few times since and its still fun to watch, like a well made film that may not be the pithyest thing on earth, but you have to watch it over and over.

Like Dirty Dancing? That's a fantastically popular movie, with longevity, but its pretty crappy...but fun!

right but, it's not all spectacle right? I meen lots of shows have something simelar to the chandelier. I think Phantom works for a whole bunch of reasons.

There are LOTS of things that make money even though they are not good. Speaking of terms of theatre, this then goes into Broadway being a business. All producers need to care bout is getting people inside. As long as they do that then they have your money. And a huge majority of the people that see it these days are tourists. They stop by the theatre and see that it says the longest running show on broadaway and then think that it must be good. They then go in and buy tickets. People assume that just cus it made enough money to run all these years then it must be great theatre. No, Phantom is a load of SH*T written by a guy who can't write a good score to save his life. Has it made a lot of money to stay open for a long time. Yes. Is it a good show? No. The show has been able to generate finacical success so that it does stay open. To quote my music director on his thoughs on the show. " It's a peace of crap. But, It's a well produced peace of crap which is why its running." I agree with him fully.

There aren't enough people in the world for your theory to be true. The reason it runs is because people want to see it over and over again.

The only real argument I think you made was that it was "produced well". So that's it? Would you care to elaborate on how a SH*Tty show written by a fraud of a composer has been "produced well" enough to run longer than any other show ever? If Cameron Mackintosh produced Lestat that well would it still be running?

Well Fenchurch, you seem to be a good example of an average Phantom theatergoer...and you've seen it what, 3 or 4 times?

And by the way Winston, for the sake of the argument, i'll give u that about tourists. So you have now acounted for the last year...what about the 18 years before there was a Longest Running Show in BWay History plastered out front?

Yup, about 3 times. Once alone when it first opened and then I took a family member and then I saw it about 5 years ago with someone from out of town.

And of course, there's the film.
