re: phantom of the opera should closed

..."ok i think if poto closed that means that all the shows now on broadway can get ahead..." Posted by: bryan

- That statment truely makes no sense at all. Everyone has their own opinion about Phantom of the Opera, but the fact is that when a lot of people think about going to see a production on Broadway, many of them think of Phantom. If all of the long runners begin to close, then there could potentially be a huge demise in the productivity of the Broadway theatre district. With the track record and quality of some of the new and recent productions on Broadway, why would you even want to think of closing a show that brings people to New York City to see them. Think about it, if people come to NYC to see a show like Phantom they may also find themselves falling head over heels for another show down the street, or a few blocks over. Aside from that, Phantom of the Opera constantly plays to a full, and sometimes entirely sold-out house (Even all standing room tickets, ocassionally), and continues to pull in tons of money. For whoever said that the Majestic was looking tacky or circus-like because of all of the photos, etc, you are rediculous. Look at the Ford Center with it's production photos from 42nd Street, the Majestic isn't the only theater that takes great pride in the production it houses. Regardless of what you or anyone else tries to say, Phantom is one of the worlds most popular musicals , and there is no doubt that it will always remain a favorite for many, yes including myself.

re: Phantom of the Opera Shouldn't Close

Yes, I agree! Well said.

Closing POTO right now would be a great loss to Broadway...it should run for a few more years, maybe even more.

>Shut your mouth! (in a nice way)

But we're talking 'bout Phantom

Well, we can dig it!

>I still think this show is amazing

Seriously, no show should close "to make room for new shows." Theatre is a business and as long as a play is profitable, it should continue running. When the box office starts to drag, then they'll think about closing.

re: Phantom of the Opera Shouldn't Close

Spider: A lot of these people on Broadway have played the role for years but they've earned that spot there. The people coming into these shows have no idea that Matt Caplan or Mark Richard Ford have been doing the show for over three years but they are moved by their performances. If you were up for a job promotion or have been at a company for years and you got fired or didn't get a contract extended because you've been working there for three years already, you'd be pretty pissed off. Broadway is no different. Perfomring may be what they love to do but it's a job just like working at Wall Street or in a lawyer's firm.

The show was meant to bring in new talent and they are still doing that. They may recycle a lot of cast members but again, those people have earned their right to perform those roles. Also, Rent is a very difficult show to perform and you can't always find people that can sing it 8x a week for months without having their voices worn out. The producers technically have been money hungry since the beginning of Rent when they moved the show to Broadway. Let's be honest here, in part of them moving the show to Broadway wasn't just because they felt Larson's work deserved a bigger audience but because anyone seeing the final product of it, KNEW that was a million dollar show on their hands for years to come. And I never saw people complaining when Rent put out an OBCR, posters, pins, The Rent Book, song selections, karoke and etc... all money driven products not because they wanted to get RENT out there--- if that were the case they would have given it away to people for free. THey did it because they wanted to make money and knew they could but no one complained. So if we really want to talk about Rent selling out or taking a path that wasn't intended in the beginning then let's go back to the beginning with the OBC.

I would think by now that Bare should have taught everyone that fans don't really matter. Fans don't pay the bills and yeah, it's great to have a huge fan base, but these people have a business to think of and Rent has to compete and find some way to stay on float. And if Rent went back to the OBC that wouldn't be bringing in the new, fresh talent you're talking about and I thought Rent to you was about bringing in unknowns.
