yeah i think its time to but phantom out to pasture. I saw "Cats" at the end of its run (shudders) and i dont want the same tipe of thing to happen to phantom. lets let something new have a theatre.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

what the f? re: phantom of the opera should closed I think it should not run forever, but I think as long as people have room in their heart for the show and really want to live the experience of it again and again, it needs to stay. CATS was getting run down and people were getting bored of it since "dance" shows were no longer the want on Broadway. I think Phantom of the Opera is a great musical that constantly brings new people to broadway and now that the movie is coming out, it is going to be sent to more of the population.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

I'm not a fan of this show but if people are going to see it, there is no reason for it to close. There are enough theatres out there for other shows and why should anyone want to see a group of actors, musicians and technicians out of work?

It's not going to close anytime soon... They will keep it around since the movie is coming in December... Also, they have good attendance for the most part... This is not one of my fav shows (I like it, yes) but I don't see it going anytime soon..

I'm not a big fan of the production, but...I think a lot of people thought Chicago would close when the movie came out, but as we can see, Chicago stays consistently strong. Phantom will run a good while longer, it's unique enough and "romantic" enough to bring in new and repeat business.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

phantom should not close to make room for new shows, because most new shows are either bad, unsuccessful, or both. there are plenty of things that ought to close before phantom. as much fun as it is to bash webber, i think he deserves to have his few very good shows run as long as they can sell tickets.

Well, next to Phantom I think both you have mentioned are inferior, even though I like both. Phantom is magical and gorgeous. The other two, even though they are amazing, does not equal Phantom.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

i said MOST new shows are bad or unsuccessful. not all but most, which hardly facilitates one of the great modern shows closing. AVENUE Q is one of the few that is both good and successful. but, as the song goes, it's likely their broadway run is basically "for now". i don't think it'll have the kind of longevity a POTO or LES MIS could have.

and the fact that you mention WICKED and have a BROOKLYN photo just proves my point twice over. at least one of them is successful.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

¡¡¡NEVER !!!

Im not happy having CATS as the longest running Broadway Musical. Phantom is like 2 on the list with 6900 or so and cats has like 7500. Cats is a nice musical for families to go see but what is broadway, is it a bunch of Cats running around, or is it people on a stage doing stuff, in a theatre. it going to be running at least until 2008 (20th years) or maybe even longer its a great show and its a show everyone sees at least once.

Why all the CATS hatin'? And for the record, I saw it toward the end of its run and I was utterly blown away.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

ive got nothing with Cats Im just sore that ACL had it and then the closed before I was grown up enough to see it. Its just that the number 1 show on the list. I personally would have loved to see Les Miserables become number 1 but they closed. I saw Cats and liked it but I was trying to make a point that I dont think that Phantom will close anytime soon.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

I don't know why you people are getting your knickers in a twist over this. There will be varying opinions on every show, all the time, and I don't see the point in going back and forth. Some people like Phantom and some don't. Who gives a f**k? The question is, should it close? If it had twenty percent occupancy I would say yes but last week it was at 85.8% which means it was doing better than about ten other shows. So NO it's not time for it to close.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

exactly, don't fic it if it ain't broke! and i'm not hatin on ya if you like the WICKED and BROOKLYN, but just know that neither is the greatest bargaining chip with a lot of people here. i'm a lot less Wicked-angry now that none of my classes are full of irritating Cheno fanatics.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

Did anyone ever see the Saturday Night Live skit where the new cast member joined CATS? Oh my goodness, it was hysterical. The new cat (Christian Slater? I can't remember) was so excited and enthusiastic but the "old" cats were miserable and wanted it all to end. "We're dying inside."

"We're dying inside."

that's actually what I recall saying the 1st time I had to sit thru CATS.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

i'm pretty sure most phantom fans understand that nothing lasts forever. but if it's consistently selling well and always seems to have a good cast, no need to rush getting rid of it just for the theatre space. there's plenty that should be closing soon enough. POTO is long-term.

re: phantom of the opera should closed

As long as it is still making a profit and helping the theater industry why should it close? I understand if it is not making a profit and just taking up space, that perhaps it should close, however, it's still selling rather well (attendance is around 90%), and it's giving a handful of performers, technicians, designers, etc., an opportunity to make a living. Personally (and keep in mind this is MY OPINION), I feel that whether I like a show or not, or feel that it's been "running for too long", as long as it's making a profit, helping the industry, and people are getting a salary, it has no reason to close. On the other hand, if it was just taking up space and there is no profit being made, then yes, perhaps it should close. But, POTO is still doing well, and I don't see it closing anytime in the near future.
