I remember them doing someting like that in the early 80s or mayb e late 70s. I was really dissapointed that it was done that way and not with the original versions on the Tonys. Oh well....

Most of the footage came from the 25th Anniversary of the Tony Awards. That was early in the 70's. Jennifer Holliday performed "And I Am Telling You" on the Tony Awards only a few years ago. It was the opening of that particular awards ahow. Not only did she sing, but Patti LuPone did "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and Betty Buckley sang "Memories". Can't remember the eaxct year.
THE 25th Tony awards were broadcast in 1972. That show included a presentation from each of the prior 24 winning best musicals(that was where you saw the LARGE YEARS IN NUMBERS ON STAGE).
The "setpiece" of the act one closing of DREAMGIRLS including And I am Telling You I'm Not Going.....was on the 1982 Tony awards, when DREAMGIRLS was nominated for best musical, but lost to NINE.
A few brief years ago Jennifer Holiday did a "stand alone" version of And I am Telling You I'm Not Going. This was part of the show opening, hosted by Rosie O'Donnell and was a mini tribute to "divas" and also had Patti Lupone singing Don't Cry for Me Argentina and Betty Buckley singing Memory from Cats.

I have seen the old footage of Jennifer singing I'm Telling You, it's from the 80's she's in full costume, and is still heavy, I think it's from the same year she did the show. She's sitting at the table crying, I thought that was from the Tony Awards, but I think that IS the one they're going to air on Lost TReasures. i did see the Rosie O Donnel how to be a diva with LuPone, Holliday and Buckley.
This program airs in CA Aug 16!!! Woo hoo!

Well all in all, I was terribly dissapointed in it.
I liked the 42nd Street and My One and Only. And I liked Worst Pies in London and that was pretty much it. I did not like Julie Andrews doing Send in the Clowns. I love her very much but I like so many who did it better.

The act one final scene from DREAMGIRLS was what they did on the Tonys in 1981. It was supposed to be in the Broadway Lost Treasures show but the rights holders made the producer pull it at the last minute. In 1986, they did a song from every Tony award winning show. DROOD won best musical that year. They also did a sequence that featured a few lines from every best play winner as well. In the Lost Treasures show, the Mostel/Channing/Blaine/Raitt/Preston clips are from the 1972 show. The Andrews/Rivera/Verdon clips are from 1984.

For me the whole thing was worth it just to see Chita and Gwen doing Chicago and to see the original Wilkkommen from cabaret.
