re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

"Really though, any production of "Godot" is probably going to be enjoyed only by lovers of old theatrical chestnuts."
Again, I saw a hysterical production with Mark-Lin Baker that appealed as much to ten year old kids as highbrows. Remember, the original starred Bert Lahr, one of the all-time great comic actors. It requires a strong hand to know how to deal with the repetitions and silences, but many great pieces are not director-proof. Chekhov or Shakespeare, anyone? Godot does not need to be treated as good medicine.

Glad to hear Nathan was doing his thing and pleasant at the stage door re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

In my opinion, things can only get better as far as the performances.

I hope to get to see this.

Beckett is NOT for everyone and that is not said to be elitist. Not everyone can enjoy Shakespeare or even (gasp) musical theater.

Personally this IS on my list of thing to catch...I absolutely adored studying absurdist theater and am looking forward to seeing this.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I understand the set issue, but there's also creative ways to do a tree and rocks. I haven't seen it, so I'm not really "bashing" it, just saying.

re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

So it sounds like a lot of people just don't like the play, not this production.

And I can't imagine making such judgement after the first preview. I mean, they have previews for a reason.

I'm still massively looking forward to this.

re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

Well, I wish it the best of luck. I'd never want a show to fail. But like I said it just didn't cut it for me. It may have been the material but like I said the boring production did the actors and the play itself no favors.

re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

"It may have been the material".

Please stop. You're obviously unfamiliar with absurdist comedy, Godot in particular. You don't get it. And that's okay - but please stop saying it's "awful" and "boring" because YOU don't get it. Pretty please.

Repeatedly calling Godot boring says more about you than the play, and the fact that you applaud your fellow theater-goers for walking out five minutes into the play (five minutes? Is that what passes for an attention span these days?) is appalling.

You think Godot is boring? Exit the King is going to send you straight into a coma.

You seriously need to relax.

If you're so annoyed by the things I say and what I thought about the show, then avoid this thread. Otherwise, don't tell me what I get, what I don't, and what I'm unfamiliar with. How about you go see this production and tell me you aren't bored out of your mind. I've seen productions of KING before and enjoyed them. I am very excited to see this current revival.

And you know what, if you go see this GODOT and like it, then good for you. I'm not going to start freaking out on you because you have a different opinion than me though.

If you disagree with my point of view, then explain why. Don't put words in my mouth and make me seem malicious and stupid.

And who the hell are you to say that it's appalling that I "applauded" people for walking out. I wish this show nothing but the best. Did you ignore that point I made? I don't ever wish for a show to fail. But this production just didn't work for me, so yes, I wish I would have left during intermission.

But I hope it finds an audience and is a success for Roundabout. As I said multiple times. I just won't be part of that "audience" and that's fine. I don't have to be a fan of every show that comes around, hit or flop.

So stop patronizing me and treating me like I relish in the fact that shows are not successes and that audience members walk out during the performance.

Unfortunate you feel that way. I don't think you're malicious or stupid, I don't think you relish shows closing and I certainly haven't put words into your mouth. I may have been a little emphatic but you're reading way too much into my post and being more than a little defensive about it. How about we both relax a little?

This is the only Godot thread, and that's why I'm posting here. You said in this very thread that you were unfamiliar with Godot. I didn't make that up. I have also repeatedly said here that Godot is not for everyone. Not everyone likes the same things and there's nothing wrong with that.

What I object to is your repeatedly categorizing the play as "boring", without explaining why, or accepting that it's possible that instead of the play being boring, you were bored by it. Big difference. And that you keep saying it's boring, adding nothing new. Say it a different way, maybe?

I'll withdraw the "applauded", but I think it's ridiculous for anyone to walk out of a show five minutes in, and find it hard to believe that anyone thinks that is the "right idea". It's disruptive to performers and audience alike. I mean, why bother in the first place if you can't at least manage to sit through one entire act, much less five minutes?

FWIW, I am seeing this show next week, largely as a result of this thread. If you go back over older posts, WickedRocks, you'll see I have very often backed you up. We're not always going to agree. Thanks for posting your review. Shake hands and part friends?

re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

Sorry. Long week...I guess it was just the tone of your message I objected to.

Sorry.

re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

No apology necessary. Everyone has bad days, and it's always good me to be reminded that tone doesn't always come across the way it's intended on a message board.

And hey, some good has come of it. Now I've decided to see the show.

re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

I seem to be in the mixed catagory in regards to what I thought about the play itself. I definitely haven't "studied" absurdist theater, but I do know I loved Exit the King, and I saw that on the second preview I believe.

Not to totally derail this discussion about Godot, but I don't think opinions on this thread should be discounted because a)it's a first preview and b) because someone isn't familiar with the material/absurdist theater.

I wasn't familiar with Exit the King AT ALL before I saw it, and nor am I familiar with a lot of the plays I see on Broadway. This doesn't mean I can't say I found it bad or boring. I happened to love Joe Turner's Come and Gone at the first preview, and have seen it again since, but if I had found it boring I have the right to think so.

No one should have to be familiart with a piece or a genre in order to enjoy it. It may aid in the enjoyment, but it shouldn't be so esoteric that it turns an audience off.

re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

I would never dream of telling someone that their opinion is wrong or invalid, but I do think there should be a CERTAIN awareness of what one is seeing when they enter a theater.

While I totally realize that not everyone read WAITING FOR GODOT in high school, or is familiar with Beckett or absurdist theatre's tendencies, I think one really should be at least a smidgen informed as to what they're getting beforehand. A perfect example: I remember reading on these boards that TOP GIRLS was an incoherent mess that was one of the worst things the poster(s) had ever seen and there was no way to "fix it."

Yes, WAITING FOR GODOT has inpired debate and disagreements over its content, and the push-and-pull between "boring" and "fascinating" for decades now. You really should know going in that it's basically "about" two guys standing around, yakking and not doing anything of much consequence. Just going in knowing that, say, Nathan Lane is in a play -- and nothing else -- is just the type of uninformed theatregoing that results in one hating anything that's the least bit challenging or complex, and inspires audience members to dismiss a hugely-respected/beloved classic as "so boring."

re: rOcKS @ 'Waiting for Godot'

It seems to me that some of the people posting reviews aren't getting the play itself, which makes it hard for them to judge the merits of the production.

But I disagree with the statement that Beckett isn't for everyone. Maybe I am being idealistic, but I think his plays can speak to everyone, but in different ways. The subjectivity of the theatre is one of the main tenets of absurdist theatre. You get from it what you put into it.

But, and this is a big but, you have to engage. With Beckett (as with Ionesco and Pinter and Genet, etc.), it's not a sit-back-and-be-entertained experience. Their shows are an active experience. If you approach them without a willingness to watch with an active intellect, and instead watch merely to consume, you miss out. And you lose the excruciatingly personal subjectivity that makes their plays masterpieces.
