Posted: 11/24/06 at 2:52pmIt is a sad day for theatre lovers and movie musical lovers. It is time to see THE BAND WAGON again--a priceless script. And I feel lucky to have seen the OBC's of PETER PAN, DO RE MI, and THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES, and regional productions of ON THE TOWN, WONDERFUL TOWN and BELLS ARE RINGING. Memories of those shows will always stay with me. We are fortunate to have the availability of all of their shows on CD.I think the lyrics to "Some Other Time" from ON THE TOWN are particularly apt today--it is a pensive song, but one with hope.

Posted: 11/24/06 at 3:04pmMy favorite musical, "On the Twentieth Century," has lost another of its great creators. She joins her longtime writing partner, Adolph Green, Cy Coleman, Florence Klotz and Madeline Kahn in musical heaven. Comden and Green's book and lyrics for "Twentieth Century" are hilarious. It's high time this wonderful show is revived on Broadway.

I hoped that she and John Kander would hook up and write shows together...
I saw her and Adolph Green in "A Party With..." ages ago. I still have my ticket stub from it.
Very, very sad...

I feel pretty bad, I thought this would be about Ugly Betty getting cancelled.

And, besides being one of the most talented writers in theatre and film, She appears in one of my favorite films of all time - "Garbo Talks" as the great Greta Garbo, herself.
I hope you're up there partying your a** off, Ms. Comden - enjoying the company of Leonard Bernstein, Adolph Green and all the rest of the wonderfully talented people you shared this earth with.

Posted: 11/25/06 at 4:39pmI was somewhat surprised that the NY Times obituary for Ms. Comden barely makes mention of Singin' in the Rain, apart from one quick reference early on.

I had the pleasure of taking a workshop with Betty and Adolph. They assigned a bunch of fledgling musical-theater writers to write a 15-minute scene and song about someone's--anyone's--first day in New York.
Our contributions were pretty unremarkable, but listening to their commentary was like having a class with Comden and Green and a party with Comden and Green at the same time.
