I just saw Showtimes Reefer Madness and I'm madly in love with it. I think read somewhere that the right weren't going to be released, but I hope i made that up and if I did does anyone know who owns them?

You have to go straight through Dan Studney and Kevin Murphy for the rights. They are the writers. The rights are ridiculously expensive...something like $1,000 a week + a percentage of your earnings from the show.
In a related, but unrelated story
I spent 67 bucks on the score and book,
used over 120 sheets of paper and two cartridges of ink on my printer
and spent weeks devoting myself to putting together a cut down, senior project version of Reefer Madness with me as The Lecturer and my friends Taylor and Britta as Mae and Mary
and our proposal was denied last Monday.
I know it's because we're in high school and all, but other senior projects throughout the years have been: Madea's Family Reunion, Ave Q, Greater Tuna, 'night Mother, Cabaret, Rocky Horror.
A lot of us think it's because some of the teachers are tired of my love for shows that are odd, or in other words, really good and different and challanging for the audience.
But it's rather amusing that one teacher who really had it out for us is a graduate of Point Park, and they are doing Reefer Madness this season.
angry venting>
But anyway, yeah, I love the show, this is from the FAQ on the website:
Q: HOW DOES MY THEATRE COMPANY OBTAIN THE RIGHTS TO PRODUCE REEFER MADNESS?
A: Contact Kevin Murphy for the latest information on stock and amateur rights. We"ve kept the show on moratorium for the past few years, but we may revisit this policy after the film is released on DVD in October 2005. We allowed two outside productions in 2004 -- one produced by Scott Miller at the New Line Theatre in St. Louis and one by Scott Spence at the Beck Center near Cleveland. Sadly, both Scotts taught Kevin and Dan an expensive lesson by stiffing them on the agreed-upon royalty payment, so any future productions will require payment in advance.
the few remaining LA cast recordings are also very expensive
thanks,Im a little shocked some got the rights to Meades Family reunion.
Benjamin, if you do get the rights, don't expect it to be a direct translation from the movie. The stage production was vastly different from the final cinematic work. It includes songs never heard in the movie, and the movie has got songs (like "Mary Jane/Mary Lane") that were never included in the show. Be sure to listen to the LA cast recording for an idea (although the show was developed further upon it's move to New York and the rights available for purchase might be to the production last staged in NYC.)
This is a great musical.
NYU got the rights this year and put this show on. I have no idea what the figures came out to though...

I have read the latest update to the stage script, and Mary Jane/Mary Lane is in the show now. It is still a little different from the movie, but it's still great!
Yeah, my friend's doing the show in Fullerton, CA right now and he says, while the show is still different from the movie, many things from the movie have been added in. And I don't know what the performance rights cost. All I know is Dead Old Man Productions are still affilliated, even though it is being put on by a local theater. They open in a couple weeks and I can't wait; all of my friends are on a major Reefer Madness kick right now.

Arena Stage in Washington D.C. is doing a production of this in 2007. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Its rumored that some local company in Reno, nevada got the rights and are going to put it on this year. It might be the community college or UNR im not sure. *goes to check*
I just read off Myspace that Orange County is gonna put on a production of Reefer Madness at STAGEStheatre.
the rights must have recently been reduced or something because MIT is doing this for their Spring show this year

I'd love to do this show.
They should really start a tour for this show going to the different colleges. Though I wonder if they would make more money selling the rights for individual colleges to perform it?
Anyway..."REEFER MADNESS ACROSS THE COUNTRY!"

Our college Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts performed it this past March, with both the College and New England premiere. It was an entirely student produced, directed, choreographed, acted,...well EVERYTHINGED..show. I can't remember how much it was, but I know it wasn't bad, being that we're a club with no budget at all. At that time Mary Jane/Lane was not in the show but you could buy the music separate for it if you want. The scene in essence still exists. But we had a great time with the production, it was too much fun!
Here's a website with some photos and video of our rehearsals:

I wish I liked this show, but I don't. I'm basing that opinion on the DVD, so maybe it's not a fair shake.
A friend gave it to me, and I was very excited to check it out. But I couldn't get through it. I lasted about an hour. The music is terrible.
Sorry if I've offended anyone. I love potentially "campy" stuff like this, but it turned out to be dreadfully boring and mediocre.

So I just found out the local community theatre who I didnt even know did musicals is the one doing it. I would go to watch the trainwreck but I will not be here. so if anyone lives in the Reno area.... Auditions are on December 4th, at bruka theater.
I like the show. I think that live it might hold your attention more. It did lose me in a few places but I cant help but like it.
I can't believe all these venues are doing the show!
It's been a week and I'm still pissed off.
But now, the three of us are doing Musical of Musicals, The Musical!
(and we don't really bother with rights since we cut the shows down so short, in time, music, set, tech ect. that it's not a real production in any sense. but...shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh)
Arena Stage is not doing Reefer Madness. Its DC's Studio Theatre, as part of their Second Stage season. Its happening next summer- but tickets are available now for subscribers.
Hey folks,
I posted a while back saying we were in negotiations to release the regional, stock & amateur rights for Reefer Madness. We're still dotting i's and crossing t's on contracts, but I think we're far enough along to let the inquiring minds here on Broadwayworld.com know that we're signing with Rodgers & Hammerstein Theatricals. Kevin & I are very excited to be a part of such bluechip musical theater stock, and the people there are just tremendous.
So, any inquiries about rights could be safely directed to www.rnh.com. That should clear up any confusion.
Thanks for all your interest in the show!
