can someone please tell me the most of the really bad parts in rent? my mom is somewhat prudish and we are seeing it for the first time on the 16 in philly, and i wanna prepare her. Also, is the tour cast any good?
There's is a sex scene in Act 2 called contact
That's the worst of it
The touring cast by all reviews I've read here is excellent

There's a partial mooning.
If you're not sitting on extreme stage right, you should be fine.
this cast is excellent!!!!! as far as warnings... lots of cursing. lots of hmmmm... 'humping' and kind of sexual stuff during "La Vie Boheme". "Contact" is just a big moving sheet with the cast moaning and stuff, not that bad, (watch for Danny Calvert humping the fence during "Contact" hotness!)... and the mooning, so brief nudity. Basically you're looking at:
adult themes
adult language
strong sexual content/innuendo
brief nudity
drugs &
brief violence
also there's an open flame on stage. I don't know why they feel the need to tell you that, but they do... (and the open flame is not Angel! stop it!)

The touring cast is *wonderful*.
As for "dirty" parts, yeah, what bs2b said. And someone moons part of the audience. And there's a bit of joking sexual innuendo, hip thrusting and the like. And swearing.
I don't know if strong language would offend your mom, but the f-word is used in at least one song.
"the f-word is used in at least one song"
It is used in a lot more than that.
I don't know exactly how prudish your mom is, but mine (being the good traditional Jewish mother stereotype that she is) was rather offended at frequent sexual references and strong language, especially in "Contact" and "La Vie Boheme".

if you sit extreme stage left you'll see everything... the "humping wall" (the name me and my friends use, long story) during contact and maureen mooning benny in la vie boheme.

Homosexual relationships.
Usages of s**t and f**k.
Partial nudity (ie mooning)
Suggested sex (Contact)
Innuendo
since when are any of these things inappropriate, especially homosexual relatonships. Theatre is a form of art where ANYTHING is acceptable - there is nothing inappropriate.
I don't think it means inappropriate so much as "what my mom might be mad at me for making her go see."
well, I too was thrown off a bit by homosexual relationships being included as inappropriate, shocking perhaps to a concervative audience, but not inappropriate. as far as everything else is concerned: sex, language, nudity... those are all things that would be labeled inappropriate and given an R rating if it were a movie, as it is soon to be... even though those things are not inappropriate to most of us... That's the list I gave to my mother when she considered taking my little sister with us. The second I showed her the lyrics to Contact, she muttered something about "speak with your father about this..."
Thank goodness she went back to her fairly open-minded senses and gave the extra ticket to the kid.

grownupgroupie, I was going to say that, too, to Beka. Lots of people seem to get that wrong! :)
Well, I think your mother will be so affected she may forget the inappropriate parts. :) It's an amazing show.

There are really no "bad" parts in Rent. If your mom is just a prude, the only nudity is a very brief glimpse of Maureen's butt. If however you mean that your mom is not quite open-minded or accepting, then you might have some problems. The gay relationships are a major part of the show but other than a few kisses, there's nothing overtly sexual about them. It's a beautiful story of friendship, love, and survival. Some people can't see that through the filters of their own intolerance, though. Not saying your mom is like that but a lot of people are. I've seen the show 40+ times and I don't think I've ever seen a show where some audience members did NOT leave at intermission. Sadly, they're the ones who needed to see Act II the most. It's their loss. Enjoy the show!

Yeah, I think they meant "things that my mom may not approve of", not "what is innappropriate for the stage".
Anyway, yeah, what people have said- strong language, homosexuality (may be shocking to some people, some conservatives may be offended by it), drug regerences, lots of sexual references esp. in La Vie Boheme and Contact. If you have the soundtrack, you might wanna ease her into it by playing the clean songs (i.e. One Song Glory) and then gradually easing in the more "inappropriate" songs from least offensive to most offensive. That's what I did w/my parents. :P
This is probably not the place to ask, and I apologize- I wouldn't do this unless I was dying for an answer, lol. Has anyone seen the current Broadway cast? Are they decent (not decent as in appropriate decent, decent in terms of their acting)? 'Cause I saw the tour and they were fantabulous, but I'm seeing it on Broadway and I'm worried I'm not going to like it, lol...
