1) They haven't even begun to film yet. They're still casting.
2) No rating can be assigned to a film until a final cut is submitted to MPAA.
3) I don't think it will receive an 'R' rating, as I don't believe the producers would want a limited audience. PG-13 would be my guess as to what they are aiming for.

Posted: 11/2/04 at 5:00pmI don't think it's possible to do RENT without it at least being R for language. I would hope they don't try to cut the language, as it would ruin the entire feeling of the environment.

I believe this will get an "R" rating also if for nothing else, the language. The MPAA's guidelines are very strict on that rule, and if they were to rate the Broadway version, that is the rating it would receive.
But why do I have the feeling we're going to have to deal with this Evelyn person on this thread and her tirades?

"Evelyn person?"
Yes, I would say the Broadway version would be rated 'R' - however I would think the producers would want to keep their younger audience. This would be the first movie musical to be given an 'R' rating, I believe.

Posted: 11/2/04 at 5:04pmA PG13 RENT would be an absolute disaster. It's an adult concept, and that's all there is to it.
#9re: rent movie cuts
Posted: 11/2/04 at 5:04pmI think it will get a PG-13 rating...an R-rating for just language is a little extreme.

FAME received an "R" rating.
But as Anthony said, Columbus isn't going to shy away from ANYTHING in this. It's going to get an "R" rating and that's a good thing in this case.

Posted: 11/2/04 at 5:06pmAlso, at least the Chbosky screenplay deals with rape, sex, and nudity in what appears to be a very graphic way. It keeps with the grittiness of the show wonderfully, but there is no way it will get a PG13 if that's kept it. Which I hope it is.

Posted: 11/2/04 at 5:06pmwell- its not a kiddy show in the first place.. i dont know any familys running to take their 8 yr. olds to see Rent. I wouldnt be suprised uf it was R. According to passed posts, Contact is going to be cut and they might just cut to angel funeral.

Posted: 11/2/04 at 5:07pmWickedROCKS, you also have drug use, homosexuality, sex, and adult situations, and suicide (April)

Exactly. All those themes are taken into account when rating. But the language alone would give it that, also.
It will be a fresh interesting take on the show that I can't wait to see. With this cast, maybe it will remind people what it used to be and sadly shows no resemblance to anymore.

Posted: 11/2/04 at 5:08pmyea- if the movie wasnt rated R, then it wouldnt be rent!
#17re: rent movie cuts
Posted: 11/2/04 at 5:09pmHow are the cuts already known? They haven't even completed casting.

If RENT is rated PG-13 it will simply not be the movie it should be. RENT is a dark show that deals with very heavy issues and, while an R rating may limit the audience a bit, I think it is the only way to transfer the story to the screen without losing the gritty feel it should have.

In this interview, Columbus say he want it to remain "very real, very gritty". To me that's an "R" rating:
What’s next for you?
"Rent."
Really, you are dong it?
Yeah, I’m definitely doing it, I’m committed to it. It’s my next film.
How is it going to look?
I literally just started on it.
What are your ideas?
My ideas are to make it very real, very gritty but to preserve the - there was a chance that Rent was going to go to television and I found out about that. I’ve been a fan of it for about 7 years, and I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t be homogenized, preserve Jonathan Larson’s initial play in tact. So what you will see on screen will be that play come to life with all of New York City as its star. So we’ll open it up a little bit, but I think in terms of atmosphere we’ll try to find new people, people you’ve never seen before, put a cast together of stars who can act and sing.
You’re not considering any of the original cast members?
Well it depends. These people are anywhere fro 19 to 23 years old, so certainly we’ll talk to them. I saw the original cast, one of the cast I cast in my very first film, Anthony Rapp, he was in “Adventures in Babysitting.” And he’s the quintessential Mark, I mean they all are to me, but it’s a question of age. Because part of the tragedy is the youth. You see these people as younger kids. So we’ll see. It’s basically how they’ve aged.
Have you done a musical before?
I did the blues bar sequence in “Adventures in Babysitting.” I’ve been a fan of musicals for years, I’ve always wanted to do a musical and I’ve been fan of rock and roll longer than that, so it sort of brings it all together for me.

"Younger audiences" meaning they want the teens. Back when RENT was new, it was teenie-boppers who were singing "Seasons of Love" for auditions all the time. Rent-heads. Remember? Sure, adults did like it, but its the middle school thru high school level that also enjoys it - and that was the popular audience in the late-mid '90s.
Columbus has no say. If Miramax says its gotta be a PG-13 because that's where the money is, then that is what Columbus will have to deliver. Remember, its Columbus who cares about the story, NOT Miramax.

When Evelyn comes, please queue the wicked witch music...
It will most likely be rated R.
