"Yes, I would say the Broadway version would be rated 'R'"
The stage version of Rent would not have an R rating. There are show advisory ratings given to Broadway plays and Rent does not have one. Avenue Q has a mature advisory, as does Chicago and The Producers.

Posted: 11/3/04 at 12:29amOk I apologize in advance if this is one of my many blonde moments...but someone earlier mentioned the earlier screenplay dealing with rape. I cannot figure out what this is talking about, did I completely miss something in the stage version or was this something added to that particular screenplay?

Posted: 11/3/04 at 7:21pmI think if the language alone failed to attach a Parental Advisory label to the cast recording, I doubt language alone will give it an R rating. Bringing the ideas to visual life might do so...but it also may depend on what they do with Conact. I wouldn't be surprised if the most nudity we saw was Maureen's bum again...which wouldn't give it an R rating.

Posted: 11/3/04 at 9:25pmI'm sure Columbus would like it to be R. I'm sure it's appropriate for it to be R. But in the end, if the studio gets antsy and decides it doesn't want to lose a lot of the younger audience, it'll go down to PG-13. Because what the studio wants, the studio gets. You guys should hope they keep this fingers out of this project as much as possible.

"it only takes 2? how do you know"
I work in feature film post-production sound, and so have had those MPAA standards hammered into my head. The content decisions are always tricky to predetermine, but that rule seems pretty hard and fast.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 1:58amI've read the first draft in its entirety and thank GOD they are not going with that draft. Yes during Another Day we get to see Roger's Baggage and Mimi's Baggage in shots that are shown with them singing voice over them, and yes one is Roger seeing April dead in the bathtub and another is Mimi being raped. Personally the 1st draft of this script blows! Maureen sings most of La Vie Boeheme, Rent is sung by Roger alone while April is still alive at a gig at CBGB's one of the worst written scenes in the script. There is so much extraneous dialogue in this script that cuts imperative songs. And the dialogue sucks - it is so bad i was cringing, oh also Out Tonight is in the club and Mimi is stripping while she sings it, and she invites Angel at the end of the song to join her and they both strip bare naked, we only see their backsides according to this draft. I am really hoping and from Anthony Rapp's track listing posting of what songs are in the movie they can't possibly be doing this horrible first draft. But if they keep with the themes this film can only be rated R. I'm a filmmaker trust me no way for a pg-13 for this movie, and honestly lets be real i could get into R rated movies when I was 13 so everyone will have a chance at seeing it.
