I'm not sure Matthew Broderick will always be known as Leo Bloom. 90% of the people who grew up in the 80's will always think of him as Ferris Buler. (sp) I think of Broderick more as Eugene from 2/3 of the Brighton Beach Trilogy.

No one even associates him with that show now, mor will anyone remember that specific cast of that show in the future (or that show for that matter.)

This thread isn't called 'performances we like' it's about roles and performers that will last beyond their lifetimes in an intangible but spectacular way.

Most of the Wicked nerds probably associate Butz (who won't be associated with anything, frankly, any more than, say Hugh Panaro might be) with that show.

I mean, is it POSSIBLE for people to look BEYOND the limited scope of their own tastes and experiences to talk about the broader spectrum of theater and its history?

I know I'm in the minority, but he's never been Wolverine to me. I didn't see that film until AFTER I saw Kate and Leopold and a video of his performance in London as Curly.

I think the same with Chita Rivera, Julie Andrews and Gwen Verdon. One I would LIKE to add to the pile but can't (same reason as Chita, Gwen etc.) Barbara Streisand as Fanny Brice. Unfortunately she's now known as Barbara.
