How is this? Some reviews on show score but none explain the plot or structure. What is it like?
It's a strange piece, but I enjoyed it.
It's essentially a magical realist allegory. It takes place in a world where Black women have a degenerative disease causing their body parts to fall off, and turn to sand. So two young women seek out a celebrity "health guru" who's immune to the disease, to try to get her to help them through a bunch of self-care regimens.
Despite the morbid premise, the play is surprisingly whimsical and quirky in its tone - though it does also delve deep into the emotional toll of living with this ticking clock over their heads.
Fantastic set design.
RippedMan said: "I'd love a super dark, small version of Gypsy."
Not sure how this is related at all but...ok.
JBroadway, it's interesting that you said "it takes place in a world where Black women have a degenerative disease." I don't remember anything that specified this was happening only to Black women but maybe I'm just not remembering.
I also really enjoyed this but I went to one of the first previews and there needed to be cuts. It was running almost two hours and I think if it were closed to the hour 40 advertised it would have been great.
The acting, writing and set design are all very good. I would possibly go back if someone said cuts were made.
I think you're right, though given the context I did think it was implied. It would be interesting to look at the script and see if she specifies it at all, and to see if future licensing productions specify.
The show ran 1h45m when I saw it, though I still thought it was a bit too long.
