thanks for the replies. i think i will go see N2N first! Should i expect to shed some tears or is it more of a feel good musical?

"Haven't seen Next to Normal, but West Side Story isn't as terrible as people make it out to be. Also, Natalie Cortez is amazing as Anita."

I don't think WSS is terrible by any means, and I saw Natalie Cortez (and Jeremy Jordan), but I'd still see N2N first :P.

If you have a habit of shedding tears, then you'll shed tears imo. But I disagree when people say they walk out on a downer or whatever; the overall message is a strongly positive one I think (but watch the show).

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

It's a pretty emotional piece. So unless you DON'T connect with it, I'd expect tears. That being said, there is a bit of humor sprinkled about, obviously more abundant in Act I. But I agree with a previous poster that mentioned the feeling upon leaving is not a depressed one.

I've seen both shows and I wouldn't pluck down another red cent to see THIS production of WSS againm--and trust me, NO ONE was more excited to see this revival than I. I've seen N2N a number of times, and was thoroughly entranced each time.

Enjoy, you won't regret it.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The show is very emotional, but I cried because it really struck a chord with me. (parent's separation/divorce, mental illness in the family) But it's not a sad show, it gives a lot of hope and ends bittersweetly.

No question, see Next To Normal. In all fairness, I will say I did enjoy West Side Story. Let us know what you decide.

I'm going to agree and suggest Next to Normal. You can either lotto, or see if they have any very rear mezz seats available. They're usually $36-41, but you can still see everything on the stage perfectly. These are really the only places I've ever seen the show from, since I, too, am a broke theatre-goer. And yes, it is very emotional and tends to strike chords with many people. But you really don't leave feeling depressed. I leave feeling hopeful, really. If you haven't seen it yet, I'd definitely recommend seeing it.
