"Deserve"?
No show deserves to close.
No show deserves to open.
Every show deserves a chance.
How's that for a response?
This discussion is ridiculous.
I think SHOWS *deserve* a chance, but that chance doesn't have to be on Broadway. Broadway is just one commercial venue. There are tons of other commercial and not-for-profit theatres that could feature a said show and be just as "successful."
RENT had a great run, but it's been on Broadway for too long. It's about time that they started allowing the show to be licensed to regional and college theatres. So in my opinion, that show didn't DESERVE to close, but it didn't deserve to remain open, neither.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
