Posted: 10/26/05 at 10:12pmI want to know what some of the people who are currently on Broadway think of the movie. Like, maybe Matt. He was a fan of the show, and he's been with it for somehting like 6 years, I want to know what he will think about it. :)

i think that this is one of the few musical to movie shows we're not as scared of because we pretty much trust the actors...ive said this on another post before, but beacuse most of the actors in the movie have played the part before, we know they can do it in the movie...some people i know hate the idea of like putting in apriland giving more to the story, but i love it...we can get a deeper history.
but yes i do fear those screaming tween fans who will go crazy over it...for that i am scared.

"I'm just worried about an influx of fans that don't know anything about the stage show and how we're supposed to deal with that, you know?"
Brings up a good point. Will the nederlander be like the ambassador? People coming and expecting the mvoie recreated on stage. (where is the puppets? why aren't there 20+ girls dancing in the jail) Now granted it looks pretty similar to the stage, but will we now here, "How come that drag queen doesn't flip like in the movie, Why do they sing everything? I thought those two lesbians were gonna get married? where is the big tango number?
But I guess that is just something that happens. How many people go to grease expecting to hear those songs from the movie? At least on that front we are good.

Oh, I to want to know what Daphen will think. All this hype about the movie and all this promoting makes me want to see it now...not a minute later now. I don't know how many times i'll probably end up seeing it opening day, but it'll be many time..i can feel it.
Or lord am i going to cry.

I never cry during movies, and I've actually been close to tears a few times while watching some of the clips and the trailers.
Will Rent be the first movie to bring me to tears? We shall see...

Posted: 10/26/05 at 10:44pmMandi, i'm like you, with movies i've never cried once. But the first rent trailer, the seasons of love trailer, i couldn't help but smile real wide and the my eyes watered...and it happened. Thinking about it gives me the shivers.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 10:55pmmandi moo, I can tell you one thing that many in the current Broadway cast feel about the movie. That is, disappointment that not one of them was asked to be in it, even in a minor role, and that not one of them has been invited to any of the NYC events related to the movie or to the premiere. So yeah, that's probably the kind of response you'd get if you asked them.

its amazing how well they did the trailers... usually trailers just kinda try and interest you and get you to relate to the story lines but these ones really really reach out to you...even just the way they start out gives me chills!
and ive had lots of friends, who are not exactly "musical"people tell me how they can't wait to see it after seeing the previews...so its pretty cool they can reach out to both rentheads and the rest of the world so well!

Really? None of them have been invited? That's kind of...stupid. I mean, I would of thought that at least the cast at the time of the premiere would of been invited.
That's kind of like saying 'Piss on you guys, we're the OBC, you don't matter'...or something. =/

I talked to Yassmin Alers a little about being in the movie last week. (She was at Karmine's last show and while everyone was fawning over Karmine, I talked to her) She was like "Oh, I'm just an extra" but when I said that just having Rent alumni involved in the movie was awesome, she said that was the best part about it.
I wish more alumni- not just current cast members, but anyone who was in it in the past- had a chance to be in it. Even if they were just extras, it would be cool to acknowledge the history of the show. Kind of like when ACL became the longest running show on Broadway and they brought in every single cast member that had ever been in the show to dance onstage during the finale.

I doubt the OBC had a real say in that.
It would have been nice to have more RENT alums in the movie.

it would have been cool to have everyone from the show past and present as extras or one-line speaking roles, like one of those things only fans would notice
does anyone not realize that there are public relations people editing what we hear and ofcourse the cast is going to say the movie is good, they are actors, they are told what to say, maybe not specifically, but generally. although i dont know how they made it through the regis and kelly interview after that disasterous performance.
re: '[Rent Movie] Better Than The Show!'#38
Posted: 10/27/05 at 12:17amI cannot wait for the show, I am only hanging on by the material, ie videos pictures so far but 11.23 cannot come soon enough, I might have to go see it between my classes if I dont get out of classes that day

zzannahk, at this point, I trust the sincerity of the actors. I mean, all of them understand how much the fanbase means to this movie or else they wouldn't have bothered creating the Rent blog and all these promotional events that directly involve the fans. So I don't think they would all so willingly alienate the fans with a bunch of PR bullsh*t if they didn't really mean it, especially when they know they'll have to answer for it. And quite literally answer for it, considering they have that Q&A session with the cast at that one screening they're having (that I would give up my firstborn to attend, but can't for so many reasons beyond my control...

it's not that i dont trust them, but you always have to consider the source of the information and what they hope to gain from it. even the cast members have an agenda.
the fact that promotions aren't posted on the sony site (ie bloomingdales) makes me wonder who/what kid of people they want to come to these events, it obviously isn't the fans who check the sony site daily or more for information

I think in other cases I'd be more cynical and say things like that, about how the PR stuff is filtered and we're being fed some farce of happy faces and smiles.
But this is totally different. I trust these actors. This isn't just a job for them; it's something very, very close to their hearts. They're not feeding us PR bullsh*t -- yes, they're biased, but they're telling us the truth. I think their opinions, at this point, are the most important. This means too much to them for me to brush much off as a publicity stunt. They've shown that they care, in a very "we're all in this together" sort of way.
ETA -- what they're doing with Bloomingdale's is MARKETING. They don't need to raise awareness for the existence of the movie amongst fans. The Bloomingdale's events are to spread the word that it's even happening at all. Don't forget that there are a lot of people who don't know about the movie. Not everything is for the fans.

Many fans don't rely exclusively on the Sony site for their news; we manage to find out stuff here days/weeks before it's posted on the Sony site. And if you don't think some of these events are for fans, what do you think people who weren't fans of Rent get out of a screening and Q&A session with cast members? Especially at $150 a pop?
And as for the cast members having an agenda, some of the actors *coughAdam* have been very blunt about their opinions on other things they've been involved in and weren't especially proud of, so I don't understand why they would suddenly develop a conscience with this.

I hope Adam's happy that we're happy that he's so blunt about his happiness (or his non-happiness, as it were).
In all seriousness, if he doesn't like something, he won't be afraid to say it. This we know. This is someone who will openly curse in front of his fans, and will tell them that he doesn't like something that he knows they love. I really don't think he'd go for being asked to play sock puppet.

but sony isn't going to post a blog of the cast saying something bad about the film, those are the types of things that come out later. i highly doubt the press for the show included quotes of adam sayng he didn't like the recording.
and honestly even as a fan i am nowhere willing to pay $150 to see the movie 17 hours before i can see it for $10. even with a q&a.i'd rather see the movie 15 times.

Posted: 10/27/05 at 12:47amThe strength of the original stage production was the brilliant cast and the material. I felt Michael Grief's staging was rather sloppy and unfocused. It was hard to follow the plot at times. Hopefully, the movie fixes those problems.

Well, part of the catch is that the screening is a benefit for Friends Indeed, a cause that was very important to Jonathan, and is very present in the show.
It's no secret that Adam (and some other cast members) was unhappy with the turnout of the OBC recording. Yes, it bodes well for the Soundtrack that he can come on the blog and say that he loves it so much more than he like the original version, etc, etc. But I don't know what your point is. I mean, every movie's goal is to keep its press positive. However, my humble opinion is that in this case, it's not a load of crap. Too much effort has been put in to make this right. They want us to like it. They love it, and they're very, very proud of it. Yes, they're biased, but I know the person I talked to wouldn't bullsh*t me. I just don't know what you're getting at, or why you're assuming they *have* bad things to say about it.

They may not post it in the blog, but will say it to you in person and they have to people here.
And that was my point about the screening. Only really big fans will pay to go to that, because to them, it's completely worth the money.
