This is great news!!
I had the pleasure of seeing the show in previews. The funnisest thing on stage right now (with DRS a close second.)
Hopefully they will choose a smaller venue. The show will definitely not work in a large theater.
See this show. It is absolutely hysterical!!!
Aw, I'm so happy for them. I didn't love the show, but it was good, and this is still great news.
I saw the show last night, and it was INCREDIBLE. Spelling Bee and DRS are the two best shows I've seen in a LONG time.

Well, maybe things are looking up for this season after all! Congrats.
spelling bee will probably be next season's first musical. There are currently no theatre's free. The producers even stated they are worrying about pushing it through for this year's Tony's.
While I was excited about the possibility that Spelling Bee might be eligible for this year's Tonys... There really are absolutely NO theatres available... and maybe it'd be better to wait? I don't know what next season will bring, but this season is starting to look way too competitive for comfort. Don't get me wrong- this is definitely a good thing in lots of ways- the increased competition. But Spelling Bee rocks and deserves a perfect theater and a lot of other things...

Ya, I am pretty excited for this season on Broadway.
Now Spelling Bee can wait until a small intimate house opens for it to run with. There are many shows out there that will not make it that much longer and some of those would be the perfect size for Spelling Bee.
Which theaters do you think would work for Spelling Bee?
circle in the square
music box
cort
lyceum
booth
Helen Hayes
Eugene O'Neill
would all be fine theatres i think
just not the plymouth!

Brooklyn has been very shaky at the Plymouth since New Years, and the show has probably dipped below its stop clause which means the Shuberts can toss them out with a two week notice.
yes I agree that brooklyn is on its last legs, BUT I do not think the plymouth is a good fit for spelling bee. I think the sight liines are terrible in that theatre and the show would get lost there.

Actually, Brooklyn's running costs are so low I'm not sure it went below them more than once or twice. Sad, huh?

You mean the plot? The title is a dead giveaway. :)
I'm seeing it in a week! I can just barely contain my excitement.
Is the Helen Hayes theater available?
no helen hayes is currently being held for a show.
Do you guys think it could win the Tony a la Avenue Q?
very easily!

Who knows? I don't think it's as good as Avenue Q, but I haven't seen Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, A Light in the Piazza, or Spamalot yet, so I have no idea. Updated On: 2/11/05 at 04:27 PM
plum spelling bee is almost definitely going to be next season. It will not be up against those shows.

A show's stop clause and its breakeven are two different things.
Breakeven is when the receipts cover the bills for the week.
A "Stop Clause" (a legal term) is part of the lease and essentially says that if a show grosses below X dollars for two consecutive weeks then they may be evicted with two weeks notice by the theatre owner.
A show can go below its stop clause and still make money. It depends on the lease.
Whether the Plymouth is the best theatre for Spelling Bee or not may be a moot point. It may be the theatre that is readily available. The Plymouth would be a far sight better than the O'Neill which also may be empty soon.
