hey guys!

for our most advanced drama class in our school (which ill be taking next year) we have to complete a big project. most students do student directed shows. most in the past have been plays, but recently a girl directed "Youre a Good Man Charlie Brown" for her project and it was VERY successful. for my project, i really want to do a musical, but im having trouble finding one that fits my ideal criteria.

it needs to have:
a small cast (maybe 7-10 people)
dancing but not too much
medium difficulty songs

and by the way i already tried doing the mtishows.com show selector and i wasnt thrilled by the results.

any ideas?

thanks

OOTI is an excellent idea.

I know lots of students direct Little Shop of Horrors, which can be done with a surprisingly small cast but requires some degree of technical expertise (Audrey II). It's a fun show, but make sure it hasn't been overdone in your area- it's very popular.

"...But Kungurtseva reels off multiple fouettes and the tape is stopped so she can take a bow. The Jester, an abomination introduced to Swan Lake in Soviet times, extorts applause from the audience. The cuts don't help the storytelling, the production is bare bones and they go for the '50s-style happy ending. The audience cheers like mad at the end. It's the Russian ballet, after all..."

You could do Working...my high school did it my senior year and you could definitely do it with a small cast and there is like little to no dancing in it...

Good luck! How about...

Godspell (great for your size cast, and lots of directing options)
Once on This Island
Company
The Fantasticks
Schoolhouse Rock (also somewhat flexible in terms of directing)

Celebration by Jones and Schmidt
4 principals and small chorus.
There is a fair amount of musical staging, but no heavy dance numbers as I recall.

Ok so I read the title of this thread and went, "You're a good man, Charlie Brown." So obviously that's out. What about Seussical?

How about The Last Five Years? Tiny cast (2 people) no dancing, and when I saw it this summer at Metrostage here in Washington DC, their set was very basic, almost nothing at all. As long as you know you've got some great voices to pick from, this might be a good choice for you.

"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being." --Phylicia Rashad

Kristin Chenoweth could barely control a Great Dane she trotted onto the stage. "Great, they gave me a dog that weighs five times what I do", she quipped. For the record, she weighs 93 pounds, and has a Maltese.

once on this island. godspell is a great idea, but its very overdone. once on this island is fresh (as far as not being done often goes) and its very simple yet powerful. i went into a local production not knowing a thing about it, came out amazed and went back the next day. its very simple to do, and its a great show!
