Posted: 5/18/05 at 3:45pmof course she is. she probably won't win but she's still nominated. shows and performers from shows that have closed get nominated all the time.

Posted: 5/18/05 at 4:39pmShows that have already closed often get nominations. Being open has nothing to do with eligibility.

Posted: 5/18/05 at 6:17pmHowever, it makes it much harder to WIN if your show closes before the ceremony. "Parade" definitely would have won Best Musical had it still been running (it lost to "Fosse"), and as much as I love Bernadette Peters, Carolee Carmello should have won that year.

Posted: 5/18/05 at 7:38pmAfter seeing the show i think she should win. She does a lot with her part, but the fact that the show is closing before the actual tony's and since Light in the Piazza has gotten a lot of press and more nominations, it is looking slim.

I would think that this just lessens her chances of winning because it gives the judges less time to see her - I would think especially since it's such short notice that those judging may not have the opportunity to see her before it closes now in order to have possibly voted for her.
Who knows though, perhaps they'll try to slip it in before Sunday?
Random question - do the judges have to pay to see the shows or are they comped on specific dates or something? Perhaps they can get them in, I dunno.
As much as I didn't love the show, I really fell in love with Megan McGinnis and Sutton even more - I'm sad that they're moving onto another project and hope to see them back on Broadway soon.
Sad that this one is closing when it's so great for families and such a great mother/daughter show to experience together. I can think of at least 3 I'd have loved to see close before this one.
Ah well, what can ya do, right?

Posted: 5/18/05 at 10:32pmOne night after a show, I struck up a conversation with a gentleman from Chicago who happened to be a Tony voter. He said he had to see all nominees in a category in order to vote and that year he couldn't vote for best musical because he had not seen one of the shows that had already closed. If all voters honestly do this, that would put nominees of closed shows at a disadvantage.

All 750 voters get a pair of comps for every neominated show. They can go whenever they like prior to the ballots being due.
Many voters do not see all of the nominated shows, but vote anyway (no one knows exactly how many skip shows, but it has been estimated that as many as a third don't bother seeing everything). Many voters (the number changes, but it's probably about 150 of the 750 voters) are from out of town and come into New York the week or so immediately prior to when the ballots are due, see what shows they can and vote based on what they get around to seeing. Voters also have been known to simply vote for their friends'/colleagues' shows or vote as a bloc for their companies (Clear Channel has dozens of voters, for example).

Eh, it's like that with any awards show. The Tonys are no different. Politics. Whatever.
(You have to admit, though, it's still kind of exciting!)
