Posted: 6/27/04 at 8:53pmI have never seen the show, only listened to the soundtrack. I fell in love with the movie YEARS before the show ever came along, and when I fould out they 97% of the songs out, I was little dissapointed. But, Sutton Foster did a great job singing those songs. About the show not meeting it's profit qouta, I have noticed that a few shows that win Tony's don't seem to last too long.

I don't understand how 75 million is not a profit. Acording to Yahoo... they pulled in $75,616,509. hehe. Is that a typo?

CAST RECORDING!!!!
I always thought it was a fun show... I mean, totally innocent fun, nothing too deep. But it was good if you wanted to smile for a few hours, and Sutton was fantastic. The show gave her a great breakout role. I was sorry to see it go, and actually kind of surprised, considering that it wont six Tonys just two years ago. I'm also actually kind of surprised that it didn't turn a profit. Until Sutton's departure, at least, it seemed to be doing well.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 9:03pmIt should have been more successful. It was a fun show and Sutton was just amazing. It's a shame it didn't last longer.

Corine;
It is ovious they are not talking about awards or the fact that you or others loved the show. Variety is a buisness trade paper. It is talking from a financial point of view. You know; these shows cost a fortune to mantain, and a fortune to advertise. I also think good producing is behind a show turning in a profit and being a hit. look at Hairspray and look at wicked; one recouped really qucikly and the other if not there I am sure is on its way.

I know the business Dame.
Avenue Q has already recouped it's investment. I am not sure Wicked has.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 9:37pmSo then you loving it; has nothing to do with it being a hit or a flop. So your earlier statement as before MAKES NO SENSE!

I just don't think you can use the word "FLOP" with a show that ran two years and won many Tony Awards. It also won many Drama Desk Awards.
A Flop- a show that ran for two weeks examples (Urban Cowboy, Prymate perhaps)
Millie might not have made money but it ran two years and was not a flop.
Don't call it a flop please. It was not a money maker but it was NOT A FLOP.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 9:48pmI missed MILLIE, but if it's family-friendly and relatively easy to produce (i.e. no water fountains or falling chandeliers), it should have a good life with the regional companies.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 9:50pmJust b/c it didn't make a profit, doesn't mean that it was a flop. Many shows don't. It had a good run, but it wasn't a great show. A lot of times, it has to do with the budget for the show. Millie (like Wicked) has a lot of flash, which is expensive, plus the Marquis is huge, and it wasn't coming close to selling out. Maybe they should've moved it to a smaller theatre so their cost wasn't so high. Avenue Q actually pulls in less money than Wicked (mostly b/c it's in such a small theatre, and the tickets are cheaper for the most part), but b/c it's budget is lower...

It should tour well. It is family friendly and a sweet musical.
Although many of you hate it I will defend it to my grave.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 9:53pmYour right. Flop is the wrong word. It is not a flop. It had a very respectable run. Flop is the wrong word.

I never saw Taboo and i am very upset i missed it. I have heard some of the music and i love it.
I never even heard of Carrie. When was Carrie?
Some of my favorite flops:
All time worst show i have ever seen Prymate
Adult Entertainment
Birdy's Bachlorette (It is still running how i have no idea)
Jackie Mason's Musical (I really wanted to die when he sang)
(I saw it on Thanksgiving)(That was an OY VEY)

PORTOFINO was a flop. POUSSE-CAFE was a flop. CARRIE was a flop. DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES was a flop. All of these shows lost money AND had short runs. That what I consider makes a flop musical. A show NOT returning its investment doesn't necessarily make it a flop.
Take Stephen Sondheim for example. He hasn't had a single profitable Broadway show since A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC in 1973! Would you consider SWEENEY TODD, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, INTO THE WOODS and PASSION flops? In fact, I would say that Sondhein had only two genuine Broadway flops in his career: ANYONE CAN WHISTLE (9 performances in 1964) and MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (16 performances in 1981).

Posted: 6/27/04 at 10:09pmWoods made money, but yeah, technically, Sweeney, Sunday and Passion were flops. Not in artistic terms, but purely from a financial angle. I always think of the one night, one week or two week runs as "turkeys" myself.
