The reason we can both like the show AND agree with the statement is because we didn't all drink the kool-aid. We can see the flaws in a show and still aprreciate it.
I "enjoyed" seeing the show, I occasionally listen to the recording...but wouldn't pay money to see it again. It wasn't fabulous theater. It was just good.
Too many people fall in love with shows and are incredibly blind to its flaws. Or to the fact that we are allowed to feel differently than do they.

I don't disagree with the quote at all...and yet I also didn't think the "self congratulatory" nature of TOS made it any less enjoyable.
In fact I wish more of the boradway show's hitting the street and based on new material were as enjoyable as masturbation...the gorsses would be much higher!

I kinda see [tos] being in the same vein as Sunday in the Park with George, but more direct, not using painting as a metaphor for writing musicals, and people hail that show as the masterpiece of the master of the modern musical.
I don't. I think its concept is genius, but I truly only love about half the score and half the book. I enjoyed watching the entire show through once, but now, I'm ready to go after Putting it Together and the whole dog sequence in The Day Off irritates me to no end. The second act plods along like swimming through molasses and I just can't stay awake. Much like Passion, to me it feels unfinished.

I just couldn't get emotionally involved with the score. It had some good songs, but I have no desire to hear them again.
And, yeah, it did seem self-congratulatory to me. Maybe if I saw it onstage, it'd be different.

How are any other pieces of art any different?
Actually, they quite often are different. Look at the centuries of works that were created to appease royalty and the clergy. Or even modern day commissioned works. Some artists create works for themselves while others are about advancing the form or serving the public. The same can be said of musical theatre. I honestly don't feel Oklahoma was a masturbatory exercise as much as it was an innovation in style. And the popular fluff shows such as Mamma Mia or Dirty Dancing are created more for audience entertainment and financial success than for personal artistic gratification.

I think [Title of Show] was hurt far more by the rabid fans. I certainly had a harder time appreciating the show when I had people laughing at jokes before the punchline even came, because they wanted everyone to know how many times they had already seen it and how "in the know" they were. They seemed like a human version of the old "Applause" signs, only the operator was turning it on about five seconds too early.
I wouldn't mind trying to catch one of the regional productions of [Title of Show] to see it with a fresh audience who would be more in the moment as opposed to several beats ahead of it.
