I think your heart is in the right place and I totally understand why you did what you did (and plan to do again), but I think the grievance people have is that you're doing it on important nights of the production (1st preview, opening and closing) which are nights that are certainly going to be sold out and filled with fans of the show.
If you would like to support the show buy purchasing a full-price ticket although you won't be in attendance, you should do it on a regular evening's performance.
