Hello all,
A friend of mine is auditioning for her college show and her audition requirements are extremely specific and both of us are having a hard time picking songs for her to sing,
I was hoping and assuming someone would be able to help!
Any information is greatly appreciated! :)
here are the requirements:
the kander/ebb score stylized the sound and subject matter of specifically adult nightclub entertainment from before world war 2. auditioners should therefore be prepared to sing 32 bars of an up tempo song and 16-32 bars from any revue, cabaret, or musical comedy written between 1920-1939. these should be presented in show or cabaret style only, not jazz versions. no "cabaret", "chicago", "42nd street" or other such modern/retro musical numbers will be heard.
suggestions:
george gershwin (d. 1937)
Jerome kern (last work completed 1939)
rogers and hart before "Pal Joey"
De Silva, Brown, Henderson
Harold Arlen
Irving Berlin
Hoagy Carmichael
Cole Porter
Arthur Schwartz
Harry Warren
Kurt Weill (translation optional)
Vincent Youmans
HELP AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
Wow I'm auditioning for the same show! We also have to memorize a monologue that's been specifically given to us in the audition packet.
oh, college.
that said, there's a wealth of material in the gershwin and arlen catalogs alone. punch in those two names on itunes and see what you love. also, listen to some ute lemper recordings for something you connect with.

I must say I find the no 42nd Street confusing, since I believe all of the songs are from the Harry Warren catalog of that period, and not from his later works, that they are asking for.

Maybe they're just tired of hearing "The Lullaby of Broadway". I've been to auditions that specifically requested that no one sing songs from Wicked.

I think it struck me as strange because when reading it it appears that they are lumping it in with their "modern/retro" musicals numbers.
I don't understand the exclusion of 42d Street either, as it fits the requirements.
I'm sure you've considered and will hear these a lot:
Porter: Anything Goes; You're the Top; Let's Misbehave;
Kern: A Fine Romance;
Arlen: Get Happy; Let's Fall In Love;
Freed: All I Do Is Dream of You
