Hey there all
I live in NYC and have trained for a year with an opera singer, but am looking for the right person to teach me to belt.
Any great teachers you know?
thanks!
Did you ask your current teacher? Chances are she has some connections..

Umm, you cannot really be taught how to belt, only how to belt properly. If you can't already, especially after a year with an opera trainer, than, umm, yeah. Must be some teacher if you are resorting to a message board...
Thesbijean, that's completely untrue in every way. You most certainly learn how to belt...and most teachers that specialize in opera don't know a thing about belting, so they don't even attempt to teach it. In fact, many of them seem to think it's unsafe, which, of course, without the right training it is. But get the right teacher and you can mostly certainly learn to belt, expand your range, and do so without damaging your voice.
I'd recommend my teacher, David Sabella. He's wonderful.
Amy Spanger, Luther Creek, Hunter Foster, Kerry Butler, Jen Cody, Deven May, Kaitlin Hopkins, Kathy Brier, Molly Ringwald, Joey McIntyre, Jenna Leigh Green, Laura Bell Bundy, Brooke Tansley, and John Hill are all past/present students of Liz Caplan. She sounds good!!!
Liz Caplan
another stupid question (I'm just full of them today...) so belting ...how different is it from singing regular...I realize volume-wise, ect, but how does one achieve that really full, belty sound??? I'm looking to get the narrorater in "joseph" next year, and I would like to learn how to belt as well, but my voice teacher isn't ...ahem...that spectacular.
Study with a Seth Riggs teacher.

There are several in New York. Seth created a very specific technique that teaches opera singers how to belt, and he has several teachers in New York who teach it.
I take voice with Liz Caplan. She's an excellent teacher if you want to belt but she doesn't take a lot of new students- she usually sees people for consultations and then sends them to one of her associates. She's amazing, though, definitely call and do a consultation.
