Posted: 11/17/08 at 9:25amIf we're talking about Peron's Mistress, why the hell is she even in the show? What's the point of "Anothe Suitcase in Another Hall" aside from the fact that it's a pretty ballad and gives Eva a break and gives a young actress a chance at employment?

I thought it was to give Eva a chance to change her costume for the next scene, so I guess a little more than a break.
or maybe to give a little more insight into who Eva Peron was and what her relationship with Peron was like?

Posted: 11/17/08 at 1:03pmI suppose. Despite the fact that I loathe Lloyd Webber, I do think it's a very pretty song. I just never understood why it was needed. On the (crappy) concept album, it makes sense. Sir Andrew and Rice probably wanted to have a pop hit with it. It didn't work out that way. "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" became the huge hit from the show. Why didn't Hal Prince tell them to axe it the same way he told them to axe Che's bizarre bug spray subpolot?

To show Eva as the ultimate mercenary, a soldier of fortune concerned only for herself without a thought or care for those left in her wake (namely, Peron's Mistress). This verse says it all:
"Hello and goodbye
I just unemployed you
You can go back to school
You've had a good run
I'm sure he enjoyed you
Don't act sad or surprised
Let's be friends, civilized
Come on little one
Don't sit there like a dummy
The day you knew would arrive
Is here, you'll survive
So move, funny face
I like your conversation
You've a catchy turn of phrase
You're obviously going through
Some adolescent phase"
She was infatuated with Magaldi, and he threw her over like an old coat. Now we see how far she's gone that she doesn't notice the irony. Do you get what I'm trying to say?

Posted: 11/17/08 at 2:01pmEva Peron actually kicked out one of Peron's mistresses. he was at work, she came in, kicked the mistress out and moved herself in. Peron came back for his siesta and found Eva living there. and, obviously, didn't seem to care too much.

I don't see that there's anything wrong with giving Eva a substantial break by having this song. Eva is a bitch of a part, in so many ways! It's a nice song, it's nice for Eva to have that break, and it's nice for the audience to be able to feel sympathy for someone onstage, seeing as neither Eva, nor Peron, nor Che, nor Magaldi are particularly sympathetic. Plus, as others have mentioned, the run-in and whatnot are important character-builders for Eva.
If you cut this song out of the show, I guarantee it'd be much harder for an audience to watch. You mayn't think so, but it really is nice to have that emotional connection. Cut the mistress, and you might as well be watching a shoddy documentary.

In speaking about Eva being unsympathetic. At the end of the show she laments about her life and the choices she made. In society today, a person such as Eva's would have been described as a victim of her circumstances.
I always felt bad for Eva as she was so brutally used and thrown away at the beginning of her life. She did turn into somewhat of a tyrant but I wonder if she would have been a totally different person if her father had acknowledged her, the family he had and if she had not been practically forced into a relationship with Migaldi. The family took what they could and used her in so many ways.

Posted: 11/17/08 at 6:45pmThe only thing I have ever seen that came even somewhat close to watching a full production of Evita was the movie. Now I do realize that in the movie they changed a lot to make Evita a bit tamer and nicer then they do in the film. But, in the end of the movie I didn't end up feeling sorry for her. I felt that she got into power and took full advantage of it and controlling Peron to do what she thought was right. Yes, the movie did show shots of her with some of her family and friends from her younger days with Migaldi etc. But, that to me didn't draw sympathy to her as a character. I think that as far as Another Suitcase In Another Hall is concerned at lest in the movie where it is given to Evita to sing. I feel that it is meant to be there for you to feel sorry for her but is completely diminished when you see the person she becomes. Now, for the reprise with the mistress. I didn't like that they had the reprise of Another Suitcase in Another Hall given to the mistress and the full version given to Evita. I would have done it the other way around if it were me but that is besides the point. I think that in the movie it is intended to make Eva look a little bit mean but I don't think it works. I think that it just shows her as another aspect to why she is cruel.

I saw this production and man, he looked like a giant compared to the rest of the cast (except Matt Rawle but I don't think they were ever by each other)

I honestly have always believed in my heart that the song and part were written because patti or elaine threw a diva fit one day early on about how she never got any offstage time.
whether that's true or not, i don't know, but it does work.
