wicked1 - I had a similar experience when I took my sister the first time. She wasnt much of a theatre goer. For example the only thing she remembered from Phantom of the Opera was the chandlier crash because it woke her up. Anyway we went and she was bored. I drug her back to see it a second time and you have never seen such a change. She was even mooing. Now she sings RENT tunes and has absconded with my RENT CD. The point of all this is that RENT has a lot going on in it. At times several people are all singing at once and if you dont know the words or pay close attention you can get lost.
So my suggestion is have them listen to the soundtrack before going and give them an overview of the different characters.
The character map in the Playbill is always a good start.
