Actually, Matt, in Dancer in the Dark, Selma's son gets the operation for his eyes. She died so that he could see. That is a touching story of love. Besides, what makes it so good is the fact that she escapes her horrific life and jumps into musicals. Isn't that why a lot of us see Broadway shows, or movies, or read books? Is it depressing because it is real? And Catherine Denueve's character was the best friend everyone should have.
All in all, the fact of the matter is, you and I have differing opinions on what Broadway should be. I don't think it should be about Cats scratching about, or people having epileptic fits to the music of Billy Joel. So it is my opinion, but people spend money on these shows instead of seeing the more intelligent ones that they know nothing about, but need that enlightenment.

"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
