For the record, Sondheim didn't write the music to WEST SIDE STORY or GYPSY. That would be Leonard Bernstein. Sondheim was merely the lyricist. stagemanager2, did you mean to say "solely"?

melissa errico fan and princeton78, the portrayal of man-in-the-chair damages the movement toward gay rights by reinforcing the strongly held gross misconception that only gay males like show music--and the more you like it the gayer you are. the entire show comes across as some sort of a show queen's wet dream. the audience is laughing at the gay guy. sad that has been rewarded with tony nominations.

unbridled childish hallmark card enthusiam that lacks any capacity for objective criticism is detrimental to the legitimate theater. liotte, have you considered wearing a sandwich board and walking up and up down Broadway? tarzan programs, $20 + ticket

melissa errico fan, you are not alone. i did not "warm up to" bob martin's man-in-the-chair either. his stereotypical performance as a lonely theater queen sets back the gay agenda at least fifty years.

it's a bit pricey but i splurged tonight and went to feinstein's to see and hear rebecca luker. what a terrific show. very well reviewed in the new york times by stephen holden who said, in part, "...ms. luker is an ardent champion of new American theater songs, combining an introspective urban sophistication with musical-comedy chattiness that are scattered throughout her show...her lyric soprano lends a quality of robust well-being to everything she sings..." she sings some standards and a n
