Universal's WICKED Film - News & Discussion Thread
 Nov 19 2024, 06:11:30 PM

I saw this last night at a packed screening and I've gotta say it lives up to the hype.  I've seen Wicked on tour probably 8 or 9 times in the last 20 years and have played the soundtrack to death so I am very familiar with the show.  The great thing about the movie is that they literally have cut next to nothing in terms of music and dialouge beats. All your favorite lines are here. All of the music you love is here.  The actors GET this material. I think anyone who is

The majority of the people going to see this movie don't know who Cynthia Erivo is and those who do could really care less.  She looks like she's gonna nail Elphaba and that's all that matters

What other creative teams could be exciting for a Broadway revival with great casting? This one seems to have deflated.

What would you have considered exciting casting? I've learned to never doubt The Muny

I'm assuming it's "that" John Williams (don't think they'd let another person use that name in a film music credit. Plus he regularly works with Spielberg). Spielberg clearly got people who know what they are doing to assist."

The music element of this movie is going to be incredible and one that doesn't have to rely on drastic cu

Kind of loving the lens flares. They make the happier scenes (Tony and Maria meeting) look more dream like and fantastical, while giving the darker parts of the trailer (especially the amazing shot of Tony and Riff wrestling over the gun) a more foreboding feel. I'm all in.

Sondheim said glowing things about the movie on Colbert tonight. That's about as high a recommendation as you can get.

Did they keep the effect of Ginny waking up in bed alone and Harry just appearing out of nowhere next to her?

Cheap and Clean Places to Eat in the Theatre District?

Los Tacos if you don't mind sit/standing while you eat and it's literally right across the street from Harry Potter so you can't miss it. As far as cheap if you venture west of 9th you'll find tons of places.

I like that they did a selfie with the whole opening night audience just like they did at the first preview in November '19. This show has gotten a lot of hate for various reasons but as a fan of her music I personally enjoy it.

The Prom - National Tour

All the talk of pronouns aside I'm sure this cast will be wonderful and I can't wait to see this on tour. I loved the Broadway production and was sad it closed so early.

If you're a fan of this show (which I think there will be many new ones after this) then you have to be thrilled. Great recording.
Best versions of Rent and Les Miz to screen?
 Jan 2 2021, 11:04:01 PM
I would search out bootlegs of Les Mis (preferably the original production with the turntable.. the reboot is fine but is no where near as epic) because the only other versions are the concerts. If you end up going the concert. If you end up going the concert route nothing beats the 10th anniversary. Lea Salonga, Philip Quast, Michael Ball, Michael Maguire and Colm Wilkinson are all spectacular.. and Nick Jonas basically ruins the 25th anniversary concert.

Wow, after only two days The Prom is #2 in the Netflix top ten.
THE PROM soundtrack

Is "Simply Love" part of the movie or an end credits song? It comes at the very end of the album but feels like part of a new scene that wasn't in the stage show. Either way it's very pretty and is sung beautifully by James.

The whole album sounds great, with "Unruly Heart" being the highlight for me.

"Forget the whole case-by-case thing: No more straight actors playing gay men until the sins of The Prom are properly atoned for. Murphy, a gay man, has led some straight actors into fertile gay territory before, like Darren Criss in The Assassination of Gianni Versace. But Corden, flitting and lisping around in the most uninspired of caricatures, misses all potential for nuance, and thus never finds even a hint of truth in the role. And this is in a movie that’s supposed to be about empowering queer people!"

It's hard to say since none of us have seen the movie yet, but is this much different than the way Brooks played it on Broadway? I'd say no.
"

I saw Josh Lamon on Broadway, not Brooks, and "gayer than a bucket of wigs" was an understatement (not in a bad way, though).

With all this talk about James and his mixed reviews I'd like to point out that the other cast members are all getting mostly raves. Apparently Andrew's "Love Thy Neighbor" is one of the standouts in a movie full of show stoppers.

Jordan Catalano said: "Newsweek says Corden is “offensively miscast” and I’m glad that’s being called out because it’s true. "

Meanwhile Variety calls his performance "soulfully funny and touching" and compares it to Christopher Guest in "Waiting for Guffman".
