Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Singing in the Rain was ever on stage... I'd love to see that.

re: paid summer theater internships in Europe Mar 27
2008, 09:28:15 PM
I don't know about any specific summer theater internships, but you could probably find something if you studied abroad for a semester. I went to London through AIFS. There was an internship program there as well as the typical academic scenario. Interns have opportunities in a wide range of fields, I do believe theater is included but I'm not 100% sure, and are provided with room and board. All of the interns I met while I was there absolutely loved the program. I'm sure ther

I was literally listening to the Phantom of the Opera obc since I was born (my mom loved the music) Then I got my own cassette and was deliriously happy. And then I decided to be obsessed with Jesus Christ Superstar which I listened to every night before I went to sleep. Yeah... I was an ALW kid.

re: Any bad stage-door experiences? Mar 16
2008, 10:05:49 PM
I saw Othello in London with Ewan McGregor, and was really looking forward to stage dooring (something I usually never do) but I had looked up to Ewan for a long time as an actor and meeting him was an opportunity I couldn't let pass me by. Anyways, we're standing outside of the theater waiting for him to come out, when a group of people wearing red, plastic, cowboy hats and purple scarves (bachelorette party, I think?) join the twenty or so people who were waiting to meet Ewan after the s

re: Worst Broadway Audience Ever? Mar 16
2008, 12:30:12 PM
I sat in the grand circle (way upper balcony) when I saw Billy Elliot in London a few months ago, and the seats are admittedly quite cramped. Anyways, there was a couple sitting next to us and the girl was completely trashed. Throughout the entire show she was sucking on her boyfriend's neck, making inappropriate gushy comments the entire theater could hear, taking her shoes off. The thing that pissed me off the most though was when she put her bare, nasty feet on the top of the seat of the p

re: Three Acting Oliviers for Hairspray!!! Mar 9
2008, 06:41:02 PM
I saw both as well and thought Parade was miles ahead of Hairspray as far as acting was concerned. Granted, I've always been drawn to more angsty material/characters, but I definitely did not feel as connected to anyone in Hairspray as much as I felt for every single character in Parade. Hairspray was good, but it was absolutely nowhere near Parade IMO

re: Do you ever feel that understudies are underrated? Mar 8
2008, 11:14:14 PM
I had an understudy for Violet Weston (the actress' name escapes me at the moment) when I saw August: Osage County last Wednesday during the matinee. I thought she was absolutely incredible. She had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It makes me want to go back down to NYC and see the regular actress in the role, just so I can compare the two performances.

re: Good pre-play restaurants Mar 2

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. This sounds too good to believe though. "My friend and I got two appetizers, two entrees and two drinks for a total $14... It's located on 9th Avenue too, I think on the corner of 46th. Hope that helps!" Was the meal $14 the both of you combined? Yup. I do believe it was a lunch special: an entree with two extras for $6.50 (our extras happened to be drinks and an appetizer) We ended up going there two da

I second Joshua Tree and suggest Yum Yum Bangkok, very cheap, excellent food (if you're into Thai that is) large portions, and a pleasant atmosphere. My friend and I got two appetizers, two entrees and two drinks for a total $14... It's located on 9th Avenue too, I think on the corner of 46th. Hope that helps!

re: Is it a New Golden Age for Broadway? Feb 25
2008, 04:28:57 PM
I just think that Broadway is entering a new era, I don't know if that necessarily means a "Golden Age." Until fairly recently, Broadway audiences were mostly made up of middle aged, upper class men and women. Now most of the shows open today are geared towards much younger audiences. Broadway has found a new target audience and I think the majority of shows that open in the next several years are going to try and appeal to the younger masses. I'm hoping that these

re: Stephanie J Block to be replaced by Kerry Ellis in WICKED this summer Feb 25
2008, 01:06:39 PM
I saw Kerry last fall and thought she came off rather blah. Her voice was good, but it didn't seem like she was fully committed to the character and was just on stage because she had to be. Hopefully it was just an off night. On the plus side: No Good Deed brought the house down, she owns that song.

re: Company Commentary Thread Feb 20

I missed seeing this show live by one week, but I really think the production team did an incredible job capturing all of the emotions. I cannot even explain the cathartic experience I had while watching this alone, in my dorm room, on my tiny broken television, in the dark (don't judge). I can only imagine what the live experience was like. I have never felt so connected to a show or a character before, and I am so grateful that it's been preserved. *sigh* I feel like I have to go refl

A lot of the internships I found only require around 20 hours a week and some offer a relatively small stipend. http://www.abingdontheatre.org/internships.php http://www.newdramatists.org/bernard_jacobs_page.htm http://www.signaturetheatre.org/intern.htm

Thanks for that ashley, I responded : ) And I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not any of the actual Broadway theaters had internship programs? I looked and didn't really find any.

I got to see Parade in London last year and I can honestly say that it was one of the most incredible productions I have ever seen. Jason Robert Brown is easily one of the most talented composers working today. I cannot wait to see what comes next.

NYC summer internships Feb 15
2008, 11:16:51 PM
Does anyone know of any good ones? I'm an English (writing concentration)/Comm dual major, and I'm most interested in the casting & dramaturgy aspects of theater. I've already gotten a list together of about 70 theaters (mostly from the offbroadwayonline.com listing) and I've also looked through the Playbill listings. I'm assuming that any and all NYC theater internships are highly competitive, and I want to make sure that I've taken advantage of every opportunity out there.
