CAMELOT (Toronto Try-Outs)

May 3, 2013 — 12:38:06 AM

Somewhere I have a program from the Toronto try out. If I find it I will scan it and post it here.

It's 2012 why are actors' mics still so visible?

Apr 24, 2012 — 12:09:14 PM

Excellent points about the difference between opera and musical theatre also interesting info about Merman. The truth is that it is no longer about being heard. Nor is it even about being heard over the orchestra because otherwise we wouldn't mic the orchestra (although there will always be a requirement to have audio monitoring for the stage...which would require mics regardless). Sound Design for reinforced musicals has now become much more about artistic vision for the show then it has abo...

Just back from the first preview of PORGY AND BESS....

Aug 26, 2011 — 1:51:40 AM

I think the comparisons to My Fair Lady in this thread are missing the point. Changing the ending of P&B is not like changing the ending of Pygmalion when it became My Fair Lady. More accurately, it would be like someone doing a revival of My Fair Lady and changing it back! There would be a huge outcry if someone revived MFL and altered the ending so that Eliza went off and married Freddy instead of coming back to Higgins. Or if someone changed Camelot to have Guinevere go back to Arthur and ...

The Eight Perfect Musicals

Apr 3, 2011 — 8:47:37 AM

I understand what you're saying ILWJH. My point was that they are all shows that "work" and so should be easy to make "work". You are right though that they often can get messed up, especially when directors don't trust them. I guess I should have said that there's no excuse for screwing them up because they are just such strong shows.

The Eight Perfect Musicals

Apr 3, 2011 — 2:24:34 AM

There aren't many that fit the bill of "perfect". Sure there are lots of good ones but as far as perfect, here are my eight. West Side Story Guys and Dolls Fiddler on the Roof Sweeney Todd Beauty and the Beast The Sound of Music Cabaret A Chorus Line You have to work pretty hard to screw any of those up...

Spiderman Preview Thread!

Maybe they think that if they see the whole show they're giving it away for free. Perhaps they think that if they only see one act they'll come back and buy a ticket for the whole thing. Or maybe they are trying to address the issue of a confusing act 2. If the focus groups like act 1 but are lost in act 2, maybe they'll decide that act 1 is enough of a show, give it an ending and cut act 2. Who knows. Glad they're doing something but they're running out of time....

Julie Taymor confirms...

Jimmycurry01 you're right, LOTR did say from the beginning that it wasn't going to be a "conventional musical". Although the word "musical" appears many times in the original playbill announcement. http://www.playbill.com/news/article/91746-Lord-of-the-Rings-Musical-to-Bow-in-Toronto But I do recall a major shift in spin once previews started and one of the major issues was the lack of a memorable score. The truth is that these shows would be better served i

Julie Taymor confirms...

Jan 17, 2011 — 11:27:57 PM

I know it's been said before but this is just more confirmation that Broadway has it's very own Lord of the Rings now. Only, it's been taken up a notch...which is impressive. As you can see from this link LOTR also wasn't a "musical". http://www.playbill.com/news/article/97667-Massive-Lord-of-the-Rings-Delays-First-Preview-By-Two-Days-Starts-Feb-4-in-Toronto I recall that as word got out that the music was not very memorable th

Spiderman Preview Thread!

The Mouse didn't own Marvel until after this project was well underway. They seem to be staying out of it now too.....wisely it seems.

Spiderman Preview Thread!

So how has it been lately? Who's been during the past few performances? Are they still having to stop or have they at least worked that out?

Spiderman Preview T/hread!

Dec 3, 2010 — 1:56:18 AM

Lord of the Rings 2...Electric Boogaloo! Except with crazy flying. Injury after injury. Endless tech and revision. Rehearsing one show during the day and previewing the current show at night. Not pretty.

re: THE STORY OF MY LIFE - Final Performance - 02.22.09

Nov 23, 2010 — 1:05:37 AM

Aside from the from the bias the reviewer has towards his own production, the review is so poorly written it hurts to read it. I kept having to re-read sections because the thoughts get scrambled between the comas and the brackets. Ouch. It's nice to see this terrific little show having a life after Broadway. Hopefully it will live a long and fruitful existence in regionals for years to come.

Question about les liaisons dangereuses

Nov 9, 2010 — 12:24:41 AM

Did anyone see the Stratford Festival production this season? I heard it was terrific but I didn't get a chance to get there to see it.

The good luck continues for Spiderman..

Anakela that's very funny. Gee I wonder who talked to reporters? Gimpy, it was YOU wasn't it? Well just pick up your crutches and hobble out of here, you're fired!

Legally Blonde tour set?

Oct 11, 2010 — 2:09:24 AM

To the question of 2 versions of the set. I suspect that they have several versions of the set because of the wide variety of venues they are playing on this tour and the short load-in schedule they're on. They will typically start loading in to the theatre at 8am and have a show at 8pm that same night. The 1st national would likely have had at least and extra half a day to a day to load in and would have sat down weeks instead of days. So really, they just have different options based on the...

NON EQUITY

Oct 3, 2010 — 10:16:00 AM

The problem is not in your question, it is in your tone. From the typos and grammatical issues in your posts I'm guessing that english might not be your first language or you are very young? Sorry, I'm not trying to be critical or insulting but rather I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. The problem with email and forums and other text based communication is that it does not convey tone. The words you chose to you make it sound like you are demanding information rather than asking...

N2N closing?

Sep 11, 2010 — 11:10:53 PM

The flyer says "Last time to see it on Broadway". Any chance it will pull and Avenue Q and move off Broadway? New World Stages? It's the kind of show that could make that shift. Just a thought.
