The good luck continues for Spiderman..

These reported injuries are serious - broken wrists, broken feet? No actor should want a job badly enough to risk this kind of damage.

Another actor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the New York Times that he, too, was injured testing the same flying maneuver. This actor broke both feet a month ago.

I don't get it- is there more than one actor who has broken both feet, that the producers won't be able to figure out which actor with two broken feet anonymously spoke to the Times?

Now it's $65 million? And they haven't even started previews yet.
I wonder what the overcall is?

Assuming that the show does well with audiences (I doubt critics will endorse it) and with the high weekly running costs is able to return $250K a week to the investors, it would take 5 years to pay off the $65 million. The producers likely hope they can pull off another PHANTOM and become a tourist attraction.

I should add that $65 million would pay for a really spectacular production of FOLLIES with an all-star cast! Just a thought...

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Not for nothin but we know that. We've known that forever. Obviously, the producers are willing to give it a go.

I think what's more important is how many people will be disabled as they try to make the investment back?

Hell, $65 Million could pay for a really spectacular anything! Could you imagine A Little Night Music with that kind of budget??? Mme. Armfeldt's Liason's could each have their own split second scenery with actors portraying them! The Sound of Music could have real rolling hills and mountains. Don't even get me started on Wicked. I hope this show turns out to be a HUGE hit.

Anakela that's very funny.

Gee I wonder who talked to reporters? Gimpy, it was YOU wasn't it? Well just pick up your crutches and hobble out of here, you're fired!

I like your way of thinking!!!!

Imagine Women on the Verge with that budget?

It just speaks to the ridiculousness of continually pushing the effects envelope. Maybe someone will consider writing some quality music and forego all the spectacle to fill seats. I'd love a new musical with some decent music.

So Kevin Aubin broke both his wrists and was back in rehearsals last week, yet Karen Olivo broke one foot and didn't come back for a few months, oh yeah never.
How much did Disney put out for the guy who fell from the boat?

The fact that they keep referring to it as a "catapult stunt" makes it sound like something that should have seemed like a bad idea from the get-go.

I dunno. I love watching a train wreck as much as anyone, but there's a part of me that just keeps remembering how epically bad the buzz for the movie Titanic was. I know it's not a stage show, but even so. It was plagued with problems, everyone expected it be a total disaster, yadda yadda yadda. I ain't saying it was a great movie, but lots of people sure seemed to like it.

That is too awful to think of, actors getting so hurt on a job.

They shouldn't be experimenting on the actors.

Who is sticking up for the actors, who protecting them? They shouldn't be left vulnerable to this. Has Equity intervened for them yet? Has there been an OSHA complaint?

The Mayor, Attorney General or Governor should intervene if no one else does.

I'm just hoping that 65 million dollar budged gets us a cast recording to remember the show once it closes.

The governor, nomdeplume? Why stop there? Let's get the President involved! He should step in in favor of these poor actors who are being tortured on a daily basis! Screw the terrorist plot on our country that has recently unfolded, save the actors of Spider-Man!

"the guy who fell from the boat" has a name, curtainpulldowner, and it's Adrian Bailey. His case is still being litigated. Looks like TPTB at Spiderman saw how Disney handled that accident and took it as a lesson as to how NOT to manage an injury.

As to your cheap shot at Olivo, for the most part, people don't dance on their wrists, and do you seriously think this guy will be back in the harness anytime soon? He's back in "rehearsals" because it's cheaper for the company to keep him employed. No doubt they've already cut a deal with Mr Aubin.

Yes, the safety of our actors is worthy of the Governor's attention and intervention.

Our actors are a precious resource in interpretation of the arts and should not suffer abuse. No one should.

There's a funny headline in The Onion: "That Spider-Man musical is probably going to kill somebody".

Here's the article (I hope it's okay to duplicate it here...)

The forthcoming U2/Julie Taymor musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, essentially The Hobbit of Broadway for the way its creators have ignored all signs that it probably shouldn’t continue, has already begun racking up an impressive injury count, with cast member Kevin Aubin’s recent announcement that he broke both wrists during a flying demonstration followed by today’s revelation that another actor broke both of his feet doing the exact same stunt. Apparently, the move involves being catapulted “in a kind of slingshot effect” from the back of the stage to the lip. Hey, maybe don't do that. It's in addition to the multitude of cables that will swing performers over the heads of audience members in the orchestra section and up toward the mezzanine—without any nets, of course. This is going to work out great!
Behind the fake tinsel of Broadway is real tinsel.

LOL, that's a VERY good point.

"The fact that they keep referring to it as a 'catapult stunt' makes it sound like something that should have seemed like a bad idea from the get-go."

Wasn't it said that people will be flying around within the theater at like 40mph? (Or was it 60mph? I forget.) Think of that within a small confined space inside a theater building---getting from zero to that speed within such a space. When I first read that, I immediately thought of a catapult. I don't know how else you can do that within a small enclosed area like a Broadway theater. I am seeing this on 1/9/11, and I hvae an open mind about it.

The good luck continues for Spiderman..

Just wait until one of these actors flying around the theater at 40mph pops a harness and crashes into the audience. That will be a massive lawsuit.

No way am I going to see that show until it's been proven safe.
