I first encountered runaways at a michigan high school theatre competition. It was done by a high school as their entry for a fully staged production. Other selections that year (i think) were cat on a hot tin roof (with skipper wandering around as a ghost), waiting for lefty, and quilters. we submitted ramon delgado's the little toy dog. as an adult i've looked at the piece for musical scenes and monologues for students. the material seems a like one might hear from parents about the content.

IIRC, most of her stage work was in musicals. I agree that Mme Armfeldt would be very interesting. her carlotta would be plausible to me.

i've also always been rather fond of Marry Me a Little. I think in part because of the rueful tone to the piece. IIRC, the premise is two lonely people on a Saturday night. the songs explore the central theme of loneliness. It has always seemed in line with Sondheim's other work. I think it's a lovely little gem of a show. Cheap to produce, but with a really nice meaty material.

If KC ever pursued Sondheim Festival 2.0 mainstage productions could include Anyone Can Whistle Pacific Overtures Saturday Night Road Show with readings of the original librettos of Merrily We Roll Along, Follies, The Frogs Maybe a Cabaret Series featuring NY Talent performing a series of intimate concerts all devoted to Sondheim.
