Posted: 9/7/12 at 6:57pmConsidering all the shows of his to have received broadway revivals in the last 10 years (Into the Woods, Assassins, Frogs, 2 productions of Gypsy, Pacific Overtures, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Company, Sunday in the Park, A Little Night Music, and Follies) what do you think will be the next show of his to be revived on Broadway?

I'd like to see Saturday Night. It has a great, fun score. It's clever but accessible.
I don't think Passion would succeed. While it's one of my favorite Sondheim shows, many people find it difficult to find their way inside it.
Whistle is a relic of another time. I don't think people today would get it.
Merrily has book problems. I don't see it succeeding either.

If KC ever pursued Sondheim Festival 2.0 mainstage productions could include
Anyone Can Whistle
Pacific Overtures
Saturday Night
Road Show
with readings of the original librettos of Merrily We Roll Along, Follies, The Frogs
Maybe a Cabaret Series featuring NY Talent performing a series of intimate concerts all devoted to Sondheim.

Posted: 9/7/12 at 7:07pmForum maybe? The last revival was I think around 16 years ago so I would probably predict that will be revived next.

Posted: 9/7/12 at 7:09pmProbably Into the Woods. One way or another.

I suppose it would sound odd now, only covering songs written up through PACIFIC OVERTURES, but one could do worse than to revive SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM.
I'm not sure about the narration, since most of that info is well trod by now.

When does the updated Marry Me a Little open? That's a charming show, that deserves to be done more than some of his other revues (yes, I know it's off-Broadway). Craig Lucas conceived it while acting in Sweeney Todd (and Sondheim gave him the advice that he was a better writer than actor). I'm a big fan of Lucas' plays Prelude to a Kiss and especially The Dying Gaul, and he did a fine job with Light in the Piazza, I always wonder if he ever tried collaborating with Sondheim. Then again Sondheim has been a friend for a long time with Guare, and they haven't collaborated--
I hope we do get one new song at least. I wonder how progress is going on the show with David Ives.

Posted: 9/7/12 at 8:09pmi've also always been rather fond of Marry Me a Little. I think in part because of the rueful tone to the piece. IIRC, the premise is two lonely people on a Saturday night. the songs explore the central theme of loneliness. It has always seemed in line with Sondheim's other work. I think it's a lovely little gem of a show. Cheap to produce, but with a really nice meaty material.

Passion is coming back to NY next year, but not to Broadway. CSC is producing it.
I'd love to see Saturday Night, or a full production of Anyone Can Whistle, but that won't actually happen.

Why not FORUM? It's been long enough, and a newly realized production would be fantastic.
Besides Forum, I'd love to see MERRILY have a fully realized production, with a top notch cast. Yes, it has book problems. We all know that. But if someone like the Roundabout for instance, would pick it up for a limited run, I'm sure it would do well! Especially under the right direction.
Whatever it is, I hope it's something we haven't seen in a while, and not another production of SWEENEY or GYPSY...

Completely agreed. It's the only one of his revues that really works as a theatre piece for me.

I'd love a revival of Passion or Assassins, but I highly doubt either would happen.
My guess would be Forum or Sweeney Todd.
