Amber Iman, Austin Scott, Nick Rashad Burroughs and more join GODDESS at the Public Theatre - Spring 2025

May 20, 2025 — 6:33:28 PM

I went over the weekend and while I found parts of this exciting, it's muddled and sorely needs focus... I'm bummed they didn't have it together more because when this is good, it's intoxicating. The band's invigorating, the design elements are lush, there are some real scene-stealers in the cast, and there's savvy direction and some really cool puppetry which I'd have loved to see more of. It's got a distinctive musical profile and some incredibly catchy tunes, especially the duets and group...

OPERATION MINCEMEAT Reviews

Apr 17, 2025 — 12:01:15 AM

I had the best time at this and immediately wanted to revisit it and talk it up to people I know. I get that its brand of humor isn't for everyone and respect that. Sure worked on me, though.Mincemeat reminded me why history was my favorite subject when I was a student because it scratched that same, familiar itch where you learn a weird, funny historical fact or story and joke about it for the rest of the semester, and it took that to the nth degree. Like, if my high school self could hypoth...

TAKE THE LEAD musical in development

Apr 16, 2025 — 12:19:42 AM

This was in some ways a pleasant surprise, but in other ways it wasn't clicking, and those issues are pretty structural... I've got a lot of thoughts and recognize that there aren't many reports online about this one yet, so figured I'd throw a long-winded post on here. Sorry this is incredibly long. The premise is essentially that through a series of plot contrivances, a professional dancer (Tam Mutu) who'd been teaching ballroom on the UES ends up teaching dance class in a south Bronx high s...

Real Women Have Curves - Broadway

Apr 12, 2025 — 1:08:42 AM

Agree with the positive reports. What it is is a sturdy show with good bones that's just all-around solid. It's one of those productions where you can tell that the creatives are all on the same page about how to best serve the story. Wonderful and interesting women to root for, moving and timely storylines, buoyant music, and cohesive design elements. I loved the floral aesthetic, projections, and sets and costumes, and I hope it slides into one of those bubble slots in the best musical musi...

BOOP! Previews

Apr 5, 2025 — 5:37:47 PM

I went a few days ago and while I don't fully get the hype, I smiled a good deal and left happy.Jasmine Amy Rogers is incredible as people have said, with charisma in spades, spot-on comic timing, and pipes. Her Tony nomination will be well-deserved. But I wish she had more to hang her hat on because I did not get a clear idea of who her Betty is, what she wants, or what she wants to “shout about,” and that's more the book's problem than Rogers'. Her Betty inspires other people to follow thei...

PURPOSE Previews

Mar 8, 2025 — 12:55:26 PM

Is one side better than the other for sightlines, and do you miss much substantively sitting on the far sides? A lot of the TodayTix rush seats appear to be on the further sides, many marked partial view, and I'm debating whether to go that route or just plan ahead and do TDF for a later performance...

New Musical, DEAD OUTLAW, from Penna/Yazbek/Moses

Very vague "come see us on Broadway" messagingand it sounds like the Audible recording won't be coming until 2025 (sigh). I LOVE this score, but curiously the bigmarathon runner number that everyone thought was superfluous but also a banger of a song wasn't performed, and that's...

Universal's WICKED Film - News & Discussion Thread

Nov 21, 2024 — 11:59:30 PM

I’m still ecstatic after going last night. Could they have put any more love and care into creating this movie? The spectacle, the level of detail in the sets and costumes, Ariana’s musical comedy chops, Cynthia’s soulfulness and eye acting, the callbacks to the original Wizard of Oz movie in the orchestrations… everything so thoughtfully executed. It’s not perfect, but it is magical and I can’t wait to rewatch and see what details I missed the first time. This is how you do a mov...

JudyDenmark said: "For those who have seen it already - have you dealt with much singing along in the theaters? Seeing it tonight and that NYT article from yesterday has me worried…"At AMCs they have a short video before it starts where they tell people not to sing, talk, etc. with some clips from the movie in it. My screening didn’t have any singing either last night, just applause.

Gun & Powder at Paper Mill

Oct 31, 2024 — 10:40:00 PM

Huh, it's a shame they're thinking of changing it. On top of sounding snappy, Gun & Powder tells you precisely what the show's about in a way these less memorable titles don't.

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING. BREAK A LEG

OhHiJohnny said: "Any thoughts on first two rows in terms of sight lines? They’re pretty heavily discounted normal seats, but I’d rather center than side if the sides are so obstructed, and orchestra than balcony if the front apron is obstructed. But if the stage is obscenely high or another thing… gahhh why is it so hard to get cheap tickets that can actually see the damn thing?"Having sat in the front row but on the side (technically row B), I'd say go for it due to the price point but shoot...

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING. BREAK A LEG

Oct 23, 2024 — 9:39:27 AM

This is such a warm, sweet show, and I'm so happy I saw it on Sunday. It's heartfelt and sentimental, but not cloying, and while it's a funny robot com-com it doesn't feel slight. They've captured the right tone. As advertised, the lighting, sets, and projections are marvelous—yes, very similar to Company, but with additional bells and whistles and it's more constantly in motion. This must've been a beast to tech with all the moving parts the cast has to navigate on time. Technically, the per...

Gavin Creel has passed away

Oct 4, 2024 — 12:10:38 AM

I've also had a tough time processing this one. I was just thinking about Walk on Through over the weekend when I was at the Met. I had only gone there once in my life before WOT and now visit pretty regularly after his show admittedly inspired me to get out and see more art. I enjoy the recognition whenever I spot pieces he sang about in the show and this Sunday, I was working through European Paintings when I spotted Judith. And I remembered how that painting had spoken to him, and I hoped ...

Titanic at City Center

Jun 23, 2024 — 12:18:41 AM

All this week, I kept getting ads for this on YouTube. It was always the same one, featuring rehearsal footage of the "Godspeed Titanic" number. Each time I thought, I should skip this ad to avoid score spoilers since I wanted to go in cold this weekend as a newbie to the show, but I never could click past that snippet because it just sounded too sublime to ignore... Wow, finally hearing the full score live blew me away. I found myself getting misty-eyed a few times this afternoon at the shee...
