HEATHERS THE MUSICAL to Play Final Performance Off-Broadway in November
Posted: 6/25/26 at 2:32pm
That's 2 of New World's 5 stages getting a shakeup in the coming months, with GAZILLION BUBBLE SHOW finally closing in September.
Curious to find out what comes in next.

Making room for SIX?
Posted: 6/25/26 at 3:27pm
i'd like them to continue this string of revivals and put evil dead the musical back in that space

No way will this survive till November they had four rows filled the other day, but I had fun. Hello SIX

It was great for a while, but I’ve had diminishing returns since the original cast left. I was going to go see Lisa Ann Walter but just never got motivated to see it. I do feel bad for Jeanette Bayardelle booking this and being told two days later that she’s gonna be jobless in November.
I’m curious if they would consider putting some of the Encores! transfers here. I’d love to see THE WILD PARTY or BAT BOY in this space

I will always appreciate this production for the Kuhoo Verma moment it gave to us.
Kind of hope Six just has a dignified death and we get some new stuff at NWS.

Is the Six moving off-Broadway thing actually happening, or is that just another rumor?
Because I was curious is the proshot hitting theaters soon might indicate they were going to wind down their tour or Broadway run.

I've wondered that myself; is this just BWW thinking it's the logical next step, or is there some truth to this rumor?

ATG is producing BAT BOY and unless something has changed they are still aiming for Broadway. Bizarrely.
WILD PARTY is probably too big. One of the things that brought down shows like HEATHERS and DRAG is that they're almost Broadway-scale in their cast, band, and crew size. SPELLING BEE is kind of the sweet spot for commercial off-Broadway: 9 in the onstage cast, 5 in the band, and lends itself well to a small space. SIX fits that.

Did the show recoup?
Posted: 6/25/26 at 5:58pm
I'm kind of surprised they wouldn't try to run through the end of the year. It seems odd for them to close prior to the major holidays.
Either way - I've been long delayed getting to see this, so I definitely will before closing.

The holiday boost only exists for some shows, and it's harder to get tourists to an Off-Bway musical - even one that's based on a movie.

No, not even close.
It’ll make a killing on tour though.

I’m surprised they extended, they have been doing shows for 50-80 people. 🫠

Spelling Bee doesn't appear to be extending, either, which is a shame. So that's three of the theaters there that'll be empty come September.

If I'm looking at this correctly, their last extension from April 12th to September 6th was announced on 2/3, just two months before that extension was set to end. I wouldn't count them out yet.

Yes, I have long wondered why the transfers of (smaller scale) Encores or nonprofit off-Broadway theatres don’t go to NWS instead of Broadway.
Posted: 6/25/26 at 8:51pm
I just assume it's because Off-Broadway shows don't get Tony noms or tours, which are about the only things that make these transfers viable in a business sense.

I don’t quite understand how these off-Broadway shows work financially. Heathers The Musical is far from a great show but I had a good time, in part because Sara Al-Bazali, the Veronica standby I saw at a packed Thursday matinee, was so talented that I overlooked the flaws.
Back in March, the show seemed to sell out every performance but I guess it has weakened since the departure of some key cast members and because - as we have seen with certain Broadway musicals - shows just hit a wall at a certain point.
This musical has bounced around for years, all over the world. Have the producers or creatives made some money, even if this off-Broadway run will not?

Nobody does, tbh. Not even the producers and investors.
There has been such an increase in commercial off-bway musicals post-pandemic, and TITANIQUE and LITTLE SHOP gave a lot of people false hope.
I believe LITTLE SHOP is the only musical to actually recoup in recent years. And that has the benefit of famous IP, star actors, and it got PPP pandemic money. It only has to fill 2100 seats a week, as opposed to HEATHERS having to fill 4,000 a week. LITTLE SHOP is on lower-tiered union contracts, and the Westside Theatre is probably also cheaper to rent than NWS. And a revolving door of casting in a show like HEATHERS or LITTLE SHOP means there are always rehearsal and replacement expenses too.
"This musical has bounced around for years, all over the world. Have the producers or creatives made some money, even if this off-Broadway run will not?"
The creatives get money (upfront fees and a % of the gross). The lead producers will have made a little money, because they get an office fee for producing the show (not a huge amount of money). It's the investors who are not making money. Maybe one or two companies recouped over the years, but each investor pool is different.

This is a complete and outright lie.

And that is not true.

Peyton List was the big casting draw despite the fact that critical reception of her was not good. I know I tapped out when most of the originals left. I went back for Kuhoo and Jodie Steele and, while Kuhoo was electric, Jodie Steele seemed to play her like Chelsea Handler after a bender. After 8-9 trips, I think I just had my fill.
