Favorite songs with dominant cello
 Jan 3 2014, 12:17:40 AM
Of course, Spring Awakening! The cello in Quiet is beautiful. Adding to my list: The I Love You Song, The Beauty Is, and in the Overture to The Light in the Piazza, at 1:52 starts a cello duet that is simply perfection.

I've always been into orchestrations and I'm lately falling in love with the rounded warmness of the cello. One of my favorite songs with noticeable cello is 'How Glory Goes', where the cello has a really interesting line even throughout the verses, not to mention the really moving part it has during the reprise of the call.
I also love the cello in 'The Next 10 Minutes'.

How good are the seats in the rush? And from TKTS?

Broadway musicals with foreign languages

Ha! Didn't think of Fiddler. How forgiving would audience members be, if when during one if the songs there was a verse in Hebrew? It wouldn't be a super important verse, and it wouldn't have a punch line, but it would remind you of the culture the characters are coming from. They should be speaking in Russian anyway...
I'm assuming Soul Doctor will have lyrics in Hebrew...

AwesomeDanny: I actually thought that fact I couldn't understand the sharks completely, made the whole gang fighting more justified. Here are these two groups with different cultures, and they can barely understand each other. No wonder they hate one another. Plus it made America make a lot more sense. And when Gladhand tries to speak to them in Spanish at the dance, and he talks to them like they're stupid, and HE doesn't even know enough Spanish to communicate between the two groups... I loved

How common is it to have lyrics/dialogue in a show in English, in a different language? How do audiences usually deal with not necessarily understanding every word that is said?
I'm wondering mainly because of the WSS revival, where people were complaining about the Spanish. But there was The Light in the Piazza, that had very extensive Italian songs/dialogue, and as far as I understand no one had a problem with that. In The Heights has quite a few lyrics in Spanish, that never bothered me.

Wow, I love the Light in the Piazza one! And those Next to Normal ones are really bizarre...
Tick Tock- Company

The only character that I think can be from a different race is Marta. In her scene with Bobby she asks him if he knows anyone Puerto Rican, to which he replies negatively. He also says he doesn't know anyone black. "Well, see, frankly I only seem to meet people like myself". It wouldn't make sense for him to have friends of a different race, because there is a specific line about it! Marta can be motivated to ask him about it if she were black or Asian (like with Anika Noni Ross or Angel Desai)

Wow, just came back to read so many interesting, insightful useful posts. Thank you everyone for all the replies and a really great thread!
And specifically about the generation thing- Joanne gives a speech about how they are the generation gap. I never understud that line, but this whole being born in the mid thirties things helps that line make sense...

The fag lyric has been changed into: "I could understand a person if he said to go away, I could understand a person if he happened to be gay". So I guess the need for that line remains..

Thank you for all the insight! Everyone but AfterEight seem to think it's a necessary part of the show, which is funny, because I always found that his scene in the park with Kathy is one of the most important scenes in the show and that Kathy is enough of an established character, keeping in mind her solo in You Could Drive a Person Crazy, to not have to have Tick Tock to balance out the girlfriends.
Luvtheemcee: our production isn't fully staged like the original, and yet it's not complete

I'm choreographing a production of Copmany in Jerusalem, and I'm interested in hearing what people here think of Tick Tock. How odd does the dance feel in the run of the show? Did something feel missing with a production you saw that ommited it? I've seen both the 2007 revival and the 2011 concert.
Is it odd to add other dancers to Kathy's moment? Which choreography did you prefer, original or concert?
I feel like Tick Tock along with Poor Baby and Barcelona make Robert's scene with Ap

Re-enjoying Favorite Cast Albums
 Jun 17 2013, 10:43:38 AM
Thanks for all the advice! AllThatJazz- I think I'm only having this problem because I haven't purchased a new album for a while, so I'm not excited about anything new..
I'll try the shuffle trick.. I do tend to listen to chunks of albums at a time, so I guess random songs might be a fun change.

Re-enjoying Favorite Cast Albums

I find that I no longer find cast albums that I love as much fun to listen to. The experience isn't as thrilling as the first 100 times you listen to them. So I turn my iPod on and there's nothing I really wanna listen to, although it's full of cast albums I love. Have either of you had this problem..? Can you make yourself enjoy something again, after you've listened to it a thousand times...?
Torch Songs for Boys

I love Not a Day Goes By, the ending can be pretty high, but it's a song that transposes down and still sounds good. Plus it's also quite short, and has the belt at the end...
Company score
 May 13 2013, 04:45:26 AM
I'm going to be part of the creative team for our upcoming production of Company in Jerusalem. It's the first Sondheim score we're attempting, and I'm worried about its difficulty for the not necessarily professional singers.. I know the score too well to notice if it's difficult.. I'm sure that Not Getting Married is hard, and that Bobby's songs are hard too.. But how hard? How hard are the songs for the rest of the couples? How confusing are the harmonies..? Just wanted to know in advance so
