AUDRA GYPSY Reviews

poisonivy2 said: "I think Audra was really good acting-wise. It's the vocals I found weird. The other night I heard Lea sing "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and the approach was so much more natural than Audra's operatic soprano voice."This is clearly just a case of personal taste, but I saw Lea in Old Friends and thought it was flat, boring, only sounded vaguely pretty. This was after Audra's performance cracked me open and entirely reframed the show for me, so -- I suppose that's asking a lo...

Scarywarhol said: "I'm glad I never took the time to do an in-depth take on why I appreciated the production and have loved watching Audra's performance, which is very specific to it, change over the course of the season. I'm aware that this is not an airport and I don't need to announce my departure, but every time I've opened this thread the production is only being discussed in terms barely relevant to what it is or what is being achieved (or not, to some) at the Majestic. Yawn."I'd like t...

Lincoln Center Theater to Revive RAGTIME at the Vivian Beaumont, Fall 2025

Harriet Craig said: "LCT’s website says that membership is currently closed to new enrollment. If you’re not currently a member, you can sign up to be notified when a new membership enrollment period begins. To answer your question, in case you do manage to become a member: It’s one ticket per member per production, not per performance, so yes, you would have to pay full price if you went back again. In the past, there have been exceptions to this if a show runs a long time, so I was able to g...

Lincoln Center Theater to Revive RAGTIME at the Vivian Beaumont, Fall 2025

May 6, 2025 — 1:28:27 PM

I'm considering an LCT membership to get good priority seats to this revival. Does anyone know if there's a limit on how many performances a member can attend at the member price? I know it's one ticket per member per performance, but does that mean that I would have to pay full price the next time I attend?I tried to call and ask, but was on hold too long and gave up. Thanks!

Audra McDonald and Danny Burstein Make Tony History!!!

May 5, 2025 — 11:18:19 PM

Audra mentioned that her husband bought her a Tony the Tiger t-shirt as a gift to celebrate her history-making nomination, which I thought was very cute.Audra's win rate is just unreal, and a bit of a fluke (as far as I know, no one else has every racked up three wins in five years). That being said, she's my pick to win this year too for her transcendent Rose's Turn.

The 78th Annual Tony Award Nominations for 2025

May 5, 2025 — 11:05:56 PM

Apologies if this has been addressed, but does anyone know what happened to the usual Tony nominee press day that's typically one or two days after the nominations? Was that delayed for some reason?

The Official TDF Thread

Would love to hear about seat locations for Gypsy if anyone has gone in the last week or so.I have tickets in two weeks and am hoping for seats in the front mezz/rear orchestra as other members have commented previously, but I know it'll be busier what with the Tony nominations coming out next week. My tickets are for a Tuesday which I hope will work in my favor.

Featured Actress in a Musical contenders?

Apr 13, 2025 — 1:27:02 PM

I loved Jordan Tyson in Gypsy and thought she completely made the role her own. I've now seen her three times from mid-previews in December to the end of March and thought she was a standout each time. I wouldn't say shrill at all, though I understand why her choices don't work for some people.I would love to see Jordan get nominated, and if she does get in over Joy, that would be fine with me.

Eden Espinosa on Lempicka Troubles

Apr 3, 2025 — 10:37:50 PM

From what Eden said in this podcast and in other interviews about Lempicka, it seems like she kept saying yes to difficult elements that individually she didn't want to say no to, but everything together was unsustainable -- for any actress. Might someone else have sung the score more technically precise than Eden did? Sure, but the fact remains that the role was too heavy to be performed regularly. I often think of Patti LuPone describing the experience of singing Evita -- that it was writte...

AUDRA GYPSY Reviews

I agree it’s very clear that Louise likes Tulsa from the dialogue. She heavily hints she wants to be the girl in his act. I didn’t know that she was supposed to dance in that number and didn’t think it was lacking. It would have been fun to see Joy Woods dance more since she has a background in it, but I suppose her holding back in this moment makes the strength of the choreography work better as an emotional moment in the Garden of Eden scene. She’s finally free and unencumbered, or somethin...

AUDRA GYPSY Reviews

I actually LOVE Jordan Tyson's choices as June -- driven to madness by her mother, forced to perform girlhood onstage with no end in sight -- but she's certainly taking a big swing and I get why other people wouldn't like it. I particularly love her reaction to Louise saying that Herbie only cares about the act and doesn't want to marry Rose, just absolute deranged disbelief. I went back to the show this weekend (inlovewithjerryherman, I think we were at the same performance) and while I thin...

Tony Awards Race

Jan 26, 2025 — 11:29:05 PM

Granted I haven't read every Gypsy review but the ones that I did read have praised Audra unequivocally but had some gripes with the production overall. I thought Sara Holdren's review for Vulture was particularly thoughtful. But point taken that the reactions on this board certainly aren't representative!

Tony Awards Race

Jan 26, 2025 — 11:06:26 PM

Because the Gypsy revival as a whole hasn't been received particularly well, I can see the theatre wing awarding Sunset best revival and best director and giving Audra the leading actress trophy. I'm not sure if her awards history helps or hurts -- clearly the voters like her a lot, but who knows if there will be an attitude of "she has enough."

Thanks all! I'm going to opt for a front mezz seat with that discount code since that seems a safer bet.

REDWOOD Previews

chrishuyen said: "Weren't people saying Lempicka changed for the worse from out of town? And hey, I guess it worked for Outsiders"Lempicka made pretty significant changes to the book in each successive iteration -- FWIW, I think a lot of the cuts made for Broadway hurt the show.I've heard good things about Redwood via friends who saw it in La Jolla. I'm going right after opening and am looking forward to it! I have medium expectations and an open mind.

Has anyone sat in a box for this production? I'm leaning away from purchasing a box ticket because I don't want to be so far to the side, but I'd like to consider all of my affordable-ish options.

help choosing a seat for Gypsy!

Given the stadium-style seating of the orchestra, the mezz feels higher than it typically would in other theaters. I would agree with the others who recommended orchestra row M!

AUDRA GYPSY Reviews

I saw this production recently and was absolutely blown away by Audra. I had never seen Gypsy live, though I knew a lot of the music and I'd watched the Patti production at the NYPL library, and I'm glad this was my first "real" Gypsy. I just connected with Audra's Rose deeply and immediately; I experienced Some People as if I'd never heard it before, in the best way.I love Audra's more operatic sound -- to me it sounds like the truth is just coming out of her, whereas with the belters I can ...
