GALILEO to Open at the Shubert Theatre, Fall 2026
 Feb 11 2026, 10:29:19 PM

I saw it twice in Berkeley. Yes, Raul was great as always, as was Jeremy Kushnier, but the book definitely needed quite a bit of work. And, as bear882 said, the Joy Woods characters is terribly written. They took an interesting historical character and turned her into a petulant, reckless teenager who just wanted to chase after her boyfriend. Still, I'm very tempted to go to NY to see this, not only for Raul, but also to see if they managed to fix the worst parts of it.

London-Tom Stoppard's Arcadia at the Old Vic
 Oct 31 2025, 08:42:53 PM

Having last seen the 2011 New York production with Billy Crudup and Raul Esparza (gift link of NYT review), I look forward to revisiting Stoppard's wordplay and craft."

That was an incredible  production; I remember it fondly. Arcadia is my favorite play, so I wonder if I'll be able to make it to London. Hm.

'Luigi: the Musical'

We saw this a few weeks ago. The cast was almost uniformly terrible, but we had a really good time. The songs were funny and the cast certainly was putting in their all.

'Pacific Overtures': Bravo to Kunoichi's rare San Francisco revival at Brava Theater!
 Jun 3 2025, 07:36:32 PM

Thanks for the review. I've been trying to figure out if we can fit it into our show schedule (and if it would be worth it). "Poems" is my favorite from Pacific Overtures, followed by "A Bowler Hat." Oddly enough, I've never cared for "Someone in a Tree" even though I know that was Sondheim's favorite. I always preferred "A Bowler Hat" -- which is similar thematically while appealing to me rather more melodically.

Tony Award-Winning PARADE Revival On Tour
 May 31 2025, 09:28:34 PM

We just came back from the matinee and echo your thoughts. Although I've listened to the original and Donmar cast albums I've never seen a live production, and found it very moving. Loved Max Chernin's performance.

David Henry Hwang's 'Yellow Face' Debuts (5/16) on PBS' 'Great Performances'
 May 31 2025, 09:25:00 PM

Thanks for the background! We saw a local production just a few weeks ago, which seemed to be the original 2 act version, so it was especially interesting to watch the Broadway revival to see what stayed pretty much intact and what was changed or trimmed.

Remembering the fine songs of Peter Foley, an award-winning writer Sondheim praised and mentored

Thank you! I'm not sure I've ever heard his music and now I"m sorry I didn't discover him while he was alive.

Mayer-helmed GALILEO musical and more part of Berkeley Rep season

Thanks for the reports thus far. Seeing it this weekend and then again a few weeks later. Ticket sales have seemed to be good enough that the production has already extended another week.

Flying Over Sunset - Previews Thread

Ha! Thanks for the levity everyone. We had tickets for Friday night, and I'm thinking this thread may have been more entertaining!

Flying Over Sunset

I'm Asian-American and I know what Cary Grant looked like. Casting, say, an Asian-American as Cary Grant wouldn't seem radical to me. It would seem like pandering. I don't need to be pandered to, and I'd really rather not picture producers patting themselves on the back by pretending they did something radical by deliberately casting against type.

There are plenty of Broadway parts where casting a white or not white actor wouldn't matter, but a 20th century mat

It was delightful. My husband has already said he wants to watch it enough times to have the songs memorized.

I'm so in love with that album cover!
"'FOSSE/VERDON' COMING TO FX"
 Feb 13 2019, 01:14:17 PM

Thanks. I'm actually relieve to hear this angle. It circumvents the issues of so many biopics that try to cram too many events into the time it takes for a movie/TV show.

Sunday In The Park With George @ SF Playhouse

Wayman_Wong said: "I saw the original ''Sunday in the Park With George'' on Broadway many, many times, starring Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, and their PBS filming and 1994 reunion concert. Plus, the meh Menier Chocolate Factory version and 2017's radiant revival, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford. I know the show so well, frankly, I was tempted to skip the S.F. Playhouse production, but I'm glad I didn't. I doubt anyone will ever trul

Sunday In The Park With George @ SF Playhouse

Thanks for the reviews. I might give it a chance then. They did a terrible casting job with "Into the Woods" and then after I saw their "Promises, Promises" I vowed I'd never see another musical there again. Since "Sunday" is my favorite musical I've been torn between wanting to see it and worried they'd botch it.
