South Pacific Movie Dream Casting
 Jul 9 2010, 05:05:28 PM
The thing that keeps coming to my attention is that this is a Hollywood production so there will be NO real consideration of who neccessarily is BEST for a part but rather what cast can be the biggest draw. Due to this I think:

Nelli Forbush - Anne Hathaway... She is the best of both worlds as she actually has musical theater talent and is currently the hottest "legitimate" young female talent as Amy Adams and Reese are old news at the moment.

Emile - Hugh Jackman!....Yeah

I have owned this album for ten years and still don't quite know how I feel about it! Even though I am a Mandy fan and this album does have some jewels("The Room Above Her" and "You are Beautiful" are among my favorites) but songs like "Beat Out that Rhythm on the Drum" and "Honey Bun" are downright terrifying and unintentionally hilarious!

The man can sing with the best of them, but the choices he makes most of the time are strange and distracting. I am all for the artist finding his

Oh I love this question!

I have been in crazy, scary, obsessive love with with these two women since day one:

SUTTON FOSTER

AUDRA MCDONALD

mmmmhhhhh......what I would give

Curses to Christian Borle and Peter Donovan!!

Thanks Brick....that comment was truly *genius*!

Alright guys I give. I can't see it at all but whatever..that is the beauty of the business.....I guess

Wow....I am really just amazed by these debates. It has been a long time since I have seen a performance that I truly thought was lacking(Helena in Sweeney)and really had nothing to offer in regards to an interpretation, but so many others are claiming to love. Usually there would be at least something for me to say..."okay I see that" but not with Helena. She gave a performance lacking depth, motivation and purpose yet she is getting raves by a lot of you.

Is she getting a pass because

I love when someone makes a quote and still gets what's was said WRONG! I did not say it was proof they "did not get it" I said it was proof that the film was flawed. Because have you ever known someone to walk out of a movie they thought was great?! "Gosh I loved that film and really thought it was great but I just couldn't stay for the ending"....Right! The only reason I even said it was to point out that not everyone thinks the film is a superb masterpiece. Again...I could have walked out and

Logan & Retroboy thanks for the objectivity. It has not been easy here for those of us who had issues with the movie...you are brave souls indeed.

SueleenGay I here what you are saying but I if I did not know the score by heart I too would not know what the heck she was saying in "Worst Pies..." or what was going on in "Little Priest" Plus I made it a point to observe the audience during the movie because I really wanted to see how people were responding to it...and I did not see quiet

Now FOAnatic, surely you are not trying to say that I am ignorant too are you? Hence saying that anyone who does not like the film is ignorant or just didn't get it...surely not you are not making that trite argument?!

When I read the reveiws of this film it really feels of blind devotion rather than objectivity. Is "brilliant" really the word to use for Helena's performance? Is the movie truly "superbly" made? I don't understand how something that is truly greatness can have such contr

FOAnatic...I knew someone was going to use the "they were ignorant" excuse in regards to people walking out. Again...I know the show, it is one of my favorite musicals of all time, and I could have walked out!

LJay...thanks for the comments about the cuts, but what about Helena? In regards to those comments about the cuts I say really?!!!? They can find ways to make "A Little Preist" visually work, they made "By The Sea" work but they could not find a way to make "Kiss Me" work?!! That

Rayandallthat jazz and LJ I really wonder if you guys are just to devoted to the show and blinded by the joy of seeing musical theater on the big screen to really be objective. People are not griping about the cuts because they simply love those songs, they give the characters valuable motivations and fleshes them out for us to connect with them more. That is why we need them. How can you look at Anthony and Johanna in this fim's version and care about them, we don't even get the chance to know

Hen88, I don't know if Oldman sings, but he does come from that British background of training where you learn to do everything so I wouldn't be surprised. But truth be told he couldn't have been any worse than anyone in the film.

Sueleen Gay....thanks for the comments.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the film's score on its own but in conjunction with the singers they had in the film it felt out of place. I agree with you...use performances that can match the grandness of the score or tone the score down. Otherwise you get the unbalance this film had.

Yeah we all heard the same that Russell was going to be Sweeney but I had heard that it was between Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson for Mrs Lovett. Now I would kill to see Emma in that part...could you even imagine?!!

Now I am not a Russell Crowe fan at all...but I do think he would have been a great Sweeney. I mean after Gary Oldman what other overseas actor can do that inner intensity and rage(and be downright intimidating) better than Russell?!! Hmmmm maybe Ralph Fiennes but I will le

All Right...let me prepare myself to be hated and banned. It seems that many here have bought into loving this film...but as this is a review thread I will put my love of Sondheim and seeing theater on the big screen aside and actually review the movie. In agreement with "Jimmy B" and "actormcfamous" I did not like the movie at all!!

What Blew:

-The Score!!! We all raved about how great it was being done, but it was TOO well done. It was an incredibly lush Broadway(forget that.

So you are saying the only way to expose teens to these shows is by doing them? Why can't you just study the plays, study the cast recordings and get books on the shows. This would expose you just the same as doing it. I didn't grow up close to New York, I grew up in Georgia and went to a school that didn't have a theater program and this is what exposed us to shows.

I understand the idea of teaching teens the classics but 16 year olds do not have to perform "Kiss of the Spider Woman" o

Right.....since this is not "Talk of the Nation" or NPR I think you can leave out the snide comments about genocide, disease, and famine. Here we talk about THEATER ISSUES and in regards to theater{not comparing it to world hunger, but keeping it in a THEATER!!! context} These high schools shows ARE a castastrophe.

Look I know you were probably the belle of the ball at your high school theater program but let's keep a level head here, okay pumpkin!

So let me be blunt with this.....High School productions of certain shows turn my stomach!! I know they are kids and it's educational theater but I AM NOT BLAMING THE KIDS. They can only do the shows selected but I am so tired of the teachers and drama heads who want 16, 17 & 18 years old to do Sweeney Todd, Cabaret, Chicago, Showboat, Sweet Charity and the like. There is really nothing worse! There are many shows out there that schools can do that would be educational and challenge the students
re: Males playing Peter Pan
 Dec 2 2007, 02:18:39 PM
Yeah I too am really over the "traditional" casting of a woman as Peter Pan. It always takes me out of it because I always know that I am watching a woman. It is very hard to believe in the BOY who never grows up when I am watching a lady play the part.

I don't understand why we have to make excuses for Helena's singing. I have read people saying that "her voice will require getting used to", "we are just not accustomed to the sound as we are so used to Angela and Patti" and "it is film so the performances and the singing are more visual" and for me none of this is true.

I "saw" Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka and the voice was still not great, I "saw" Madonna in Evita and it did not save the underwhelming singing, heck I even saw Sarah Mic
