Dream Casting for New South Pacific Movie:
I second that notion, Michael Bennett.
I think Scarlett Johanssen would also make a good Nellie.

I think you need "names" for Nellie and Luther. You need a real opera singer for Emile, and "unknowns" for Bloody Mary and Liat.
Might as well use Matthew Morrison as Cable.
I would seriously love for Loretta Ables Sayre to play Bloody Mary in the movie. I know I've said it several times here, but she was my absolute favorite person in this production.

Both Scarlett and Reese were up for the revival, but LCT decided the revival shouldn't be star-driven.
(I'd rather have seen either, actually.)
I agree with givesmevoice on that one. She has been the BEST bloody mary I have ever seen in that role. I've always thought that role was annoying, but I actually enjoy watching her in it.
Anyway, I would love Brian Stokes Mitchell to come into it again, but unfortunately it wouldn't make a lot of sense for Nellie to fall in love with an African American but falls out of love for discriminating against his children for being the same thing.
Luther Billis...hmm...maybe Sean Penn?

Might as well go with Baldwin for Billis.

In the medium of film, I think Mr. Morrison is a little long-in-the-tooth to pull off Cable. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to make him Emile.
Someone mentioned Jack Black as Billis in the other thread as a joke. But, I could actually see that working.
I refuse to see anything jack Black does so I hope he keeps his untalented ass away from this.
Definitely Scarlett Johansson as Nellie, I'd love to see what she can do with the role.

Either Reese or I quite like the thought of Amy Adams as Nelly.
Chris Evans for Cable (I think I read somewhere he can sing)
Wouldn't be shocked if Anne Hathaway tried to get involved. I know she wants to do a musical and she is a soprano so she could pull Nellie off voice wise.
Baldwin as Billis would be hilarious to see on screen. Then again, I doubt anyone could be as good as Matthew Salvidar was.

Why Bother...make something that has not been made 2x and with a concert also..Hollywood has no imagination
And the Glenn Close version was AWFUL..Harry Connick destroyed
the music ...so sad..
not as bad as Mathew Broderick Music Man
but pretty bad!
How important do people feel that having Emile sing in an operatic or opera-esque style is? Is it something that could be changed and not hurt the piece?
Anne Hathaway is NOT Nellie. She always has a quirky side in whatever she does and that wouldn't work for Nellie. Oh and I don't think she has the voice for Nellie.
Reese or Scarlett would be great
I think Reese is probably the best choice as far as box office, being right for the role, and talent goes. I don't really see Anne in the role, either, but I think you'd be reaching to say that Reese Or Scarlett's voice is as good, or better than hers.
Anne claims she is a operatic soprano so I am not sure seeing as I have never heard her use her higher register. Everytime she sings, she sings mid range. But she talks about singing arias in interviews or whatever.
And she was apparently offered Christine in Phantom but had to turn it down for Princess Diaries 2. Or that is her story. I am not a huge fan of her myself since she always puts me off in interviews. But she always talks about wanting to do a musical.
I think Reese is very much the country girl Nellie is but I do not know if she has a good higher register. I also thought she said after Walk The Line she did not want to sing again.
Not saying you're wrong, but where did she claim that she was an operatic soprano? I've never heard that before.
Witherspoon has definitely been approached and expressed interest in musical roles since WALK THE LINE -- .

I like the idea of Reese W. or Amy Adams being cast. But what about Jayma Mayes?? I have always enjoyed her even before glee!!

Amy Adams is definitely the best suggestion so far. She absolutely owns the sweet naive ingenue character, and her voice is really great. Scarlett's voice is definitely not right for this; it's very gravelly and breathy.
Is kelli o hara too old? I haven't seen her these days. But I'd love that.
