Posted: 8/20/04 at 4:55pmHi everyone. I have heard that there are video recordings of recent broadway shows that they have in the Lincoln Center Library. I have also heard that the only way to view these tapes is to say you are doing research on a certain composer or director. I would like to go there to see a list of shows that they have on reserve. Have any of you seen any past bway shows at the lincoln center library? How would I go about doing this? How much does it cost? Thanks so much.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 4:56pmIt's free. To look up what shows they have go to NYPL.org and use the CATNYP catalogue.

Not true, Matt - you can rewind, FF, pause, etc... You watch them on a computer monitor...
You can also just tell the desk girl that you're auditioning for a role and researching for that.
You have to get an ACCESS card made (different from the regular library card - on the third floor of the library) before you can use the videos....

Also...one tape I tried to view was the last revival of Chicago with Bebe Neuwirth and Ann Reinking and they didn't have it so they do NOT have everything.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 5:03pmThey're not going to have a show that's currently playing on broadway available - even if it's a revival... I've never had to call, just been able to go right in if there's an open terminal...

Posted: 8/20/04 at 5:33pmThey dont have older shows. I think Company was the first one they taped. Also a lot of shows that closed early didnt get taped. Most of the shows get taped but not all of them.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 6:30pmThey have a recording of Dance of the Vampires! Now I can see how bad it really was!

Posted: 8/20/04 at 7:14pmWait, I'm still confused. Do they ask you why you're there, or is it pretty easy to see the tapes?

Posted: 8/20/04 at 7:29pmWhy don't they have THE CIVIL WAR or THE WHO'S TOMMY? Those are my two favorites. The one for STARLIGHT EXPRESS is only 10 minutes of footage. What do you have to do to pass as a qualified researcher?

Posted: 8/20/04 at 7:31pmMy question also: "What is considered a qualified researcher?" All of the tapes have restrictions, which say qualified researchers only.
#16re: Lincoln Center Library
Posted: 8/20/04 at 7:46pmI ask the same questions as everyone else. "What must one do to be a qualified researcher?

#20re: Lincoln Center Library
Posted: 8/20/04 at 8:45pmI believe if you go in and say that you are directing the show, that's all they would need to hear.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 8:47pmunfortunately, im only 22, so they prolly wouldn't believe me. i can definitely use that in the future though.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 8:47pmThe fact that I am 18 year old girl and I look 12 might hurt that argument for me...any others? Would saying "I am doing it for a school play" not work b/c that's not professional enough?
#23re: Lincoln Center Library
Posted: 8/20/04 at 8:48pmI doubt it. But you can definately try!

Posted: 8/20/04 at 9:46pmYeah, what's the difference between "permission only" and "qualified researchers?"
