ACL will stick around for a while and i for one will be flying out to New York to see it.I always wished this show had done well in the UK its a shame it diddnt.Predicting this show will close is just silly ,ACL is broadway to many people
And as for the person saying they are some bad casting choices ARE YOU DRUNK,they have got a great cast together and you can never judge the cast untill you have seen them in that role.
I wish ACL all the best.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 9:07pmOzark, hate to tell you, but when its all said and done ACL will stand the test of time and significance far more than the crap Wicked that I'm sure you deem as the past, present, and future star of the great white way. Why don't you keep this bet between your Defying Gravity-t-shirt-wearing tween circle of girlfriends and don't waste the rest of our collective time with negative, pointless postulations.

Wicked is certainly a popular piece of entertainment that will likely run for many years, however it can't be compared to a Pulitzer prize-winning, 9-time Tony winning masterpiece that changed musical theatre forever (the explosion of triple threat talent -- and schools and training to support that -- and the establishment of the workshop as an integral part of the developmental process of new musicals are just two of its major innovations).
While Wicked can be credited with introducing and popularizing musical theatre to many teenage girls, A Chorus Line not only popularized theatre (it was the first show that millions of kids and young adults saw and has inspired a generation or two to become performers, choreographers and directors -- or merely theatre lovers), according to many experts (including executives of the Shubert Organization) it single-handedly came along and saved Broadway as an entity at a time when it was in dire straits.
In the early and mid-70s Broadway was in a severe financial crisis: New York City was bankrupt (literally), Time Square was overrun with crime, tourism was at an all-time low and hit shows were few and far between. The Shuberts, which owns half of the theatres on Broadway, was at a crisis and was beginning to question whether it and its theatres could survive. The megahit of A Chorus Line which generated not only ticket sales, but massive international press -- the sort that Broadway hadn't gotten in years (including the covers of Time and Newsweek simultaneously and countless tv shows) -- is now seen by many as the spark that began Broadway's resurgence (and the Shuberts say it saved their company and their theatres).
Bottom line, few shows in history have ever had the artistic, social and financial impact that A Chorus Line has had upon the American theatre and beyond, and that deserves respect -- certainly more respect than has been shown by the person who initiated this thread and some of the sentiments that followed.

Posted: 7/20/06 at 11:10amOK--selfishly, I want it to run at least thro' November, because that's when I have tickets to see it! (and if I enjoy it, then I want it to run longer, so I can see it again!) :)

Posted: 7/20/06 at 11:13amI'm actually kinda pesimisstic about how this show will do on Broadway. The show did run 15 years but it is kind of dated.

What a completely mean spirited thread.

The revival of Grease ran forever.. from 1994 to at 1998. It was before "Chicago" the longest running revival. There was no revival in the mid 80's. The original production closed in 1980.
I dont think we should take bets of shows failing.

Didn't this thread die 20 posts ago ?
If not, let's try again. It is ghoulish to speculate on this just as it was beating a dead horse like Lestat

I think the thread is tacky, but to answer the original question: I think A CHORUS LINE will be a moderate hit and should have no trouble running a couple of years on Broadway.
It will not be the phenom of CHICAGO and it has a different audience than JERSEY BOYS or WICKED. I think it will sell well to groups who won't be able to resist seeing A CHORUS LINE on Broadway, but I think ultimately will probably be a little undone by the fact that in not being a completely rethought production, it won't generate the type of excitement or publicity some other revivals of late have enjoyed.
The cast will largely dictate the reviews, in my opinion. I can't wait to see it.

I get annoyed when people say a show is dated. so what? does that mean it is no longer good? if it's quality- it's quality. and you can't argue that. quality never ends. look at all the other "dated shows"
Oklahoma
the sound of music
West side story
Rent
chicago
Cabaret
South pacific
gypsy
and the list goes on and on and on.
none of these shows have lost their effect because they all stand the test of time because they all have universal themes that everyone, 50 years ago and 500 years from now can connect to. that is what makes great art, and that is what seperates the goods from the greats.
A Chorus line is great, because it doesn't need sets, spectacles or anything else to tell its story. it is, at it's core, a story of people who want. they all want. and that really is the driving force of the human race, is it not? we all want. and that is how this show ran for 15 years, because the audience members saw in these characters something about themselves and could connect with thier journeys.
time will go on. A chorus line will be there at the end of it.

Oh Margo i agree with you i do and i love a chorus line. Its just all the wicked bashing gets a bit dull.I dont agree Wicked only appeals to 13 year old girl's because as you said about ACL,wicked is playing to famalies to and everyone is getting something out of it.
Ive always love ACL it's one of my all time faves ,but have to say i dont think it deserved the Pulitzer (just my opinion)but i hope the new revival does really well. After all ACL is broadway.
