Why don't you let it open first? I think it's always a bet if revivals will do well or not. I really hope it does well. I love the show and can't wait for it to open...

Posted: 7/19/06 at 12:49pmLuckily there are no flying witches, shrieking singers, singing vampires, helicopters or space ships in "ACL". I hope it runs for a long time!

Posted: 7/19/06 at 1:23pmI really think it's wrong to speculate on when it will close when it hasn't even opened yet.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 1:23pmJustJohn- I am friends with a member of the production team, and they told me "At the present time the producers are not planning to allow SRO or Student Rush seats."

Posted: 7/19/06 at 1:38pmharris- As I stated earlier, I am NOT wishing it failure, I am predicting it. Frankly, as I have also said, I would love for it to run forever, however, I don't (And neither does my friend) think it will.

If the show is good, then I think it will last a while.
As far as the casting of Usher, I feel they are going for the African American dollar. That theatre is going to be full of young black kids and black people in general who don't normally go to the theatre. When I saw A Raisin in the Sun, the audience was 3/4 black kids with their cell phones taking pictures of P Diddy. It is great that these kids are going to get to see a good show, but after my Raisin experience, I think I may stay away from this type of stunt casting. JMO. And I am an African American for the record!

Posted: 7/19/06 at 1:54pmwhich is a good, and timely, move, because currently the Color Purple is packing African-American audiences in.

Is Brenda Braxton going to play Velma at the same time?
If so, that is going to be like a Benetton version of Chicago: African-American Billy Flynn and Velma and a Mexican Roxie, he he.
Ozark, a lot of theatre fans are excited for this ACL revival.
Well, more for the fact that a show they have terrific memories of is coming back. If it is well received or not, we will see.
I think there will be more fair speculation after we see how it is presented. For now, it almost seems that ACL should had never left.

Must we? Why do people feel the need to post threads like these?
I personally think this revival will do very well.
It will be a shame though if they don't at least do student rush for this.

Your prediction of the closing of a highly succesful show is completely premature and unnecessary. I am not intending to "bash" or "harass" though unless you have seen the show ahead of time and you see some blatant flaws in the production you really have no grounds to predict a closing. Just because you see it as opening too soon (even though it closed 16 years ago) and you are comparing the flaws of previous flop revivals to this show does not mean it will close. Those shows flopped because they were poorly pieced together and we have no idea as to how A CHORUS LINE will succeed.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 2:12pmIt may be good. But I think The Color Purple is attracting an older crowd. I didn't see a lot of teenagers when I saw it. But I could be wrong. And they weren't talking and taking pictures.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 2:12pmOr don't at least sell the standing room tickets if there sold out. According to this(http://www.talkinbroadway.com/boards/) it will have SRO

Posted: 7/19/06 at 2:19pmThis may be naive, but why would a production choose not to sell standing room tickets if the show is sold out otherwise?

According to Variety, apparently the advance sale has already topped $5 million (for an $8 million show) and that's with nearly NO marketing or advertising thus far (millions are set to be spent) and prior to even the very first preview of the out of town tryout in San Francisco.
In short, it's WAY too premature to start predicting the demise of a legendary beloved show (which will likely have another $10-15 million in the kitty before opening night on Broadway), especially given its longstanding international popularity and relatively low running costs (which is one of the main reasons the original was able to last 15 years -- even many years after it ceased to be a hot ticket, it was still able to run profitably versus the new blockbuster shows that came along season after season since it didn't cost much to run).

Posted: 7/19/06 at 2:23pmmikem, they could choose not to sell SRO so people would be forced to pay full price. It's greedy, but if they don't sell SRO I know I'll probably end up buying a full price ticket.
